NEC DVD-burner won't read anything after bad burn

I attempted burning an audio CD earlier today that was just under the capacity of the blank CD I inserted (79:54 under 79:57). Naturally, I figured it should work fine. The burn failed right at 100%, with no real explanation in the Nero log other than, "Drive error."

Every successive disc I have inserted, whether it be blank, audio, CD- or DVD-ROM, has failed to be even read. The drive instead spins a bit, halts, spins a bit, halts and repeats until it gives up. Any program waiting for the CD to be read, i.e. Nero when checking the inserted CD info, freezes until I either eject the disc or enough time passes for it to just tell me, "No disc inserted."

I have tried uninstalling the drive from device manager, as well as clearing any upper and lower filters on the drive from the registry. I tried inserting a disc to be read at boottime, to see if Windows was the problem, but the drive repeats the same lame spin up and halting sound.

I find it very odd that it stopped working due to a coaster. Might it have damaged itself? What else should I try?

Umm try updating your dvd drive firmware..
I had a similar ,but differnt problem ,but try plugging your computer straight into the wall so you recieve the most power ,plugging my pc into the wall fixed my problem my cd drive wasent gettin enough power since it was plugged in to a power board with 10 plugs in it .I then got a more powerful powerboard, but try plugging your computer into the wall if it does not work take it out and put it back where it was.

It could also very well be the lens needs cleaning.Get one of those cleaning sets and give it a try if it still does not work it could be defectve, how long have you had it for?

Try the drive on a diffrent computer to check if its not your computer thats the problem.

I've had the drive since August, no problems since. It's an ND-3540A. I just flashed the drive to version 1.04 from 1.01, but it didn't fix anything. I unfortunately don't have a ginnea pig PC laying around here, and my fellow geek neighbor is asleep, otherwise I'd use his. Power wasn't the issue. I will try cleaning when I get a chance.

Think and remember have you installed or deleted or updated/changed anything before you had the problem?

Everything was perfectly functional until the faulty burn. I have not done anything since the coaster other than flash the drive.

Edit: obviously I've installed things and deleted things, but nothing even remotely related to a CD failure-- nothing I could separate as a susceptible problem.

I would try the dvd drive on a diffrent computer, if it does not work then try cleaning it, if that does not work you need a new dvd burner=( ,but more peeps that are more expericend with dvd burners will be posting soon and might be able to fix yah problem.

Thank you very much for your help, Sewy; it did help me think of a few things. However, I think I'd be better off tackling this problem after some sleep. I'll be checking this forum until I fix the damn thing. lol Good night.

I may be on completely on the wrong track here but since the burning job failed at the last minute I'm wondering if it couldn't be that something in Windows is saying the drive is unavailable until this job completes.

People have suggested trying it in a different PC, that's definitely a good idea to check that the hardware is OK. My first thought though is that the CD write job is incomplete and 'waiting'.

Post back once you've tested the drive.

Did you use a disc with the correct speed? You may have a 48x burner and you may be using a 52x disc. That happened to me a while back, it would burn cd with information/files etc.. but it wouldn't burn audio cd's because it is 48x and I needed a disc with 48x or lower.

What version of nero are you using?
If your using version 7 then i would say it's that version of nero that's causing your problems because i too have a nec dvd burner (3500ag),and it doesn't completely get along with nero 7 i too got some bad burns with it.
I don't completely agree with johnedwards on blank cd's most blank media will support 1x - what ever it's supported max burn speed and they usually list the burns speeds they support.

    I'm using Nero 6.6.

I still have not had the ability to change to a different computer, but I doubt that's the problem by this point.

I tried switching it to slave (different cable), but that didn't help. I tried dusting it with a good ol' can of air and a screwdriver (you can trust that I know what I'm doing... static electricity and all that jazz). I even tried sitting the damn thing on top of the tower with just a power cable, stopping the boot at BIOS, and just inserting a CD and listening. I still got the same damn sound. I happen to have a good microphone (shure sm58), so I took the liberty of using it to record this irritance.

I've already got an RMA number from newegg (which I have 14 days to decide to use), but I would obviously rather fix this damn thing myself then go through the hassle of RMA'ing yet another part of my machine. (Earlier this year, I RMA'd the mobo, twice, and the video card, twice, as well as replaced the PSU, twice. I know. It sucked ass; truly, it did.)
