I've had this monitor for about 3 years now and this is the first time something like this occurs.

I had some problems booting windows a couple of days ago so i decided to re-install it without formatting [Repair Install] and so i did it. After that, i went back on the compt and then tired to put the screen resolution to 1024x768 which is the good one. But when i clicked on "OK", my monitor turned bacl and a message appeared in the middle saying "Out of range". So i tried 1280x1024 and that ddin't workd either, then i tried 1600x1200 and it worked but the icons and text is so small you can't see anything. So now i'm on 800x600 and i have those big, ugly icons and text.

I installed service pack 2 and everything but still same problem.

    i have a NEC LCD1715

I really need help for this.
    Thanks in advance.

Download and install the latest video drivers for your PC. Also, check the refresh rate and set it to whatever is optimal for your LCD. You should be able to get this info from the LCD manual or the maker's web site. Don't choose auto or optimal; manually set it to a number (usually 72hz or 75hz for LCD's, it might be as low as 60hz or 62hz; check the manual).
Good luck and let us know what happens....

Refresh rate: Control Panel > Display > Settings > Advanced > Monitor. You may have to uncheck the box next to "Hide modes.....".
The Asus barebones should have a model number somewhere. Go to www.asus.com.tw and go to the downloads or support page and enter your model number in the appropriate area. You'll be provided a list of available downloads and drivers. Grab the newest video/display driver.
If your LCD came with a CD, you may have to install something from there....

I'll be logging off for about an hour or 90 minutes.... but I'll be back ;) Post your results!

You also could just check the back of your monitor and see if there's a sticker mentioning the techical specifications for it, If it does have one then it might list the hz range your monitor supports.
