I've just installed speedfan onto an IBMT41 running XP pro

I can only get two readings out of it, labelled HD1 (36) and Temp1 (45). Assume these are correct, Hard disk temp and CPU temp.

There is no more info, no m/b temp, no fan speeds, nothing else. Am I doing something wrong, or is this PC just not suited to speedfan ?

Selectingg Configure again shows only these 2 temperatures with chips HD0 (160.0GB) and ACPI.

That unit probably lacks more sensors, that's probably why Speedfan only shows those two temps.

So I can't see any fan speeds ?

Apparently not, or speedfan doesn't know where to look. This is an 8 year old machine afterall and they didn't have all the extras that we do today.

    Thank you Augiedoggie,

I think that just about answers it, in a negative kind of way.

I wanted to check fan speeds because on start up with this machine I get only the message 'Fan Error', and it won't go on. Starting the T41 up in different orientation (keyboard vertical) seems to solve the problem and will start up and run as usual, without the temperatures becoming too high, although as battery has become u/s I run it always plugged in the mains/psu (20V adapter I think) and the base of the laptop does become warm.

It does sound like a slowing/failing fan. I don't know laptops but at 8 years there must be some dust bunnies in there affecting the heat.

Use passive cooling for your laptop. Passive does not require losing a USB port to run, as active cooling would.
I have my two netbooks sitting on a Targus Heat Defense mat

The pad is filled with crystals that absorb the heat from the notebook and turn into a gel. I'm happy with the product, that's why I purchased a 2nd one after I used the 1st for a bit.

My old laptop (new in 2001) has active cooling (fans that run under the laptop when connected to the USB port).

If you absolutely do not want to spend any money, get two strips of wood and put them under the laptop so there is an air space between the bottom of the laptop and the surface the laptop is resting on. I actually cut up an old yard stick to get the two strips of wood.

For checking the processor and harddrive temperatures I use HWMonitor, it launches quickly and simply tells me the temps, wait 5 seconds for the reading to 'stabilize' (usually drops 2 degrees C).
There is a free version which I use but if you want to pay you can have it sitting in the Systemtray, keep logs and other features.
It has a good reputation so I guess it's accurate but I can't say for sure, Speccy agrees with it's readings but although Speccy is handy to have it takes too long to launch just for a quick look at the temps.

There is a portable (ZIP) version of HWMonitor if you want to test it before installing it or if you just prefer portable @
