The D: partition is the recovery partition. It is red because the partition is full. It is supposed to be full, and you SHOULD NOT mess with it. It's put there at the factory to restore your PC in the event that you need to rebuild the operating system back to day-one status. Most pre-built systems do not ship with recovery discs because they put this on the D: partition. Once again: DO NOT MESS WITH THE DATA ON DRIVE D!!!

I have worked on many HP systems with Vista that have a recovery partition. From what I remember, the recovery partitions have always been red because the 10gb partition has over 8gb or 9gb of data on it. But these are HPs which are undoubtedly different from Dell. Regardless, the D drive should not be messed with except for scenarios like DomLuc mentioned. If the data on drive D is growing, this should be investigated, because the data on drive D should NOT be growing (or shrinking for that matter). It should remain the same size at all times. Generally speaking, these recovery partitions are usually almost impossible to access and/or manipulate from within Windows. This is done on purpose at the factory to prevent the end user from causing any possible problems with the recovery partition. You want the recovery partition to remain in pristine condition. You want it to work as designed when needed.

Thankyou very much both Dom and you dlb for putting my mind at rest and after carefully reading the link which i posted for you to look at, i did some thorough checking and my D:\ partition is now back to green as it should be and eveything is as it was.

    Thankyou once again ! :)
