As Many others I too have been researching this forum about the cognac. My grandparents have an hp 6535/466mhz celeron/66fsb. They have the cognac+ board. They wanted just a little boost and i figured this would be a nice upgrade for them and cheap. I went with a powerleap neo s370and a celeron 800. Upgraded bios to fresno 307 or 309 off the top of my head. Works perfect no problems as the cognac+ supports 100fsb. Bios picks it up no problem. The problem I am having is with the ram. I have read that it only supports dual sided sticks. I have a new single sided 256mb stick and does not work. I do have a 64 or 128 mb (Cant think off the top of my head) chip dual sided but this doesnt work. Does this board only support certain chipsets? Any Help would be very helpful Also will i have to upgrade the stock PSU for the new processor? It works now but in the long run I dont want it to burn in my grandparents house. Thanks.

    Hi JRWMU31,

In my experience the maximum memory I could put in without a PSU upgrade was a total of 256MB. To get the maximum the board supports I had to upgrade the PSU.

If you check the HP website for the machine you have, it should tell you the maximum in the standard config. Either 128MB or 256MB.

The memory you will require is double sided. There is a trick to it however. I think it is mentioned in the thread earlier.

I have a copy of the mainboard doco and it states that the memory subsystem WILL support upto 512 MB. The catch is the the chips on the module must be no more than 16Mbits. ie 1 double sided Module of 128MB each side = 256MB. 8 chips*(16M*8bits) per side.

You might be able to try a single sided modle but make sure it meets the spec.

Hello, I'm new here but I know where you can go to get the info you are looking for. http://s2.invisionfree.com/emachineupgraders/index.php and http://www.e4allinc.info/ I have an eMachine 633is which also has a Cognac+MB. I am now running 512 MB of (2) Kingston KVR-PC133/256 that I got at Ebay. I am also running a 1.1Ghz. Celeron S-spec: SL5XU that I also got from Ebay. (I tried 3 times with the 1.1Ghz. Celeron until I found 1 that wasn't D.O.A.) The 633is has a mATX 120WATT PSU that I had to upgrade to 230WATT PSU to get the whole thing to run stable. It's been running for about a week now with out any problems. Check out the links I listed above. They are really great people at both sites and always ready to help you out. I couldn't have done it with out their help!
