    Hi

The corporate or working world is a pain to get into of late as companies are scaling back on new posts, so its harder for many to get a job that they are interesting in.

I think my advice would be to keep on sending your resume out to companies, make the resume look different from the normal template ones, their are many templates around you can edit to suit, but do only keep it to 2 pages at most. Get smartly dressed and go with resumes in hand to local companies and see if you can speak to the HR dept and see if they have vacancies or at least keep your resume on file.

Fro experience thats a hard one as without that job how the hell do you get the experience, its a catch 22 thing sadly, so what I would suggest and while it may or may not help is to maybe devote some of your free time to a forum such as Majorgeeks and help out other PC users with your knowledge of computing and security, while this is not experience in working for a specific company I could loosely imagine that having some documented proof of your knowledge and experience in freely helping others may go some way to showing experience!

See if locally their are any computer groups, many cities have senior citizen or novice PC support groups around and volunteer to help.

Off the wall suggestion is start your own PC business up?

Have you considered volunteering some time to a reputable non-profit/public service group? You would get verifiable experience and possibly opportunity to network with people in a position to help your career goals.

The problem is, that all the certificates in the world don't make you a qualified Computer Repair Technician.
I've mentored several young tech's and it's experience that gets the job every time.
I basically taught myself computers, while I worked as an electronics lab tech, then opened my own repair business.
Now after about 31 years as a working tech, I'm retired, but still running service calls whenever someone calls me with a problem.

There are very few problems that I can't fix. But there are NO schools that teach what I know. It's all come from experience.

OH, and I don't hold a single certificate! lol
    good luck,

PS: Alpha1, you didn't fill out your profile, to include your location. Why don't you do that now.
It's pretty hard to advise you when we have no idea where in the world you live.
I wanted to send you a PM, but don't seem to have that option.

Always working to expand my knowledge and expierence certificates don't make the man but they make the man look good on paper

    Hi

I know its only like a week or so since you posted but what have you done so far to try and get your foot in the IT door? and if successful what was the tactic used? (just curious as to what you have been doing to get that job, sort of furthers my insight into this area of job finding, I'm not in IT in my work, although I use it heavily but my background is IT and Imaging)

Do you know any friends or fellow certificate colleagues that could give you a good word with their company? as knowing someone in a company is always a good head start.

It's almost impossible to advise you, when your refuse to permit someone (like me) to give you a private response when you block PM's.

It don't sound like you're really serious about anyone helping you.

They are not blocking PMs at all as there is a forum limit to stop spammers using the PM system, so if a new users doesnt have the required number of posts (and I'm not going to advise the amount needed for reasons) then they cannot accept or send PMs, the only members that can send PMs to a new user without the required number of posts are admins.

But then why do you not post in the thread the advise you would give openly?

But I know that many users on the internet hit many forums at once with the same question and in part forget the forums they have posted the question on and will never reply, so we in the end have to move on.

    Oh, Grand Pooh Bah,
I like to use the PM mode of communication for many of the same reasons you've already mentioned, so I'm surprised you even ask.

I'm a retired Computer Tech/Builder and I work about twenty different forums.
So when someone needs a little personal help, I like to take them off of the forums and onto email, where we can exchange ideas and speed up the question/answer process. But following most forum rules, I will not post my email address for public view. (I get enough spam already)
I'm already helping six different guys in four different countries, one on one.

I mean no offense to the forum, which by the way is GREAT!

I also work a car forum, just for the make and model of my own car. Someone will open a new thread with a question like "my car makes a grinding noise when I turn left". They don't fill out their Users CP with their location, or the exact model of their car, which makes answering their question really difficult.
If I were a moderator on that forum, it would be impossible for anyone to post to the forum will they complete their Users CP.

I'd love to see that idea carried over to other forums too.
    Oh well,,,,,,,

I recently had to return to the job market, and I did everything I could to make myself more marketable.

I made myself a personal website, with an HTML copy of my resume, introductory videos, a portfolio of past work, and as much contact info as I could muster.

I made myself a personal business card, and attached it to every resume/application submitted.

I really, really worked my network of contacts, asking friends if they knew anyone hiring, I consulted with career counselors, and even took on volunteer gigs.

I took a totally different route, when I first moved to Florida in '88. There was no place for me in the Aerospace industry, as my experience negated me from menial jobs and my lack of a college degree kept me out of the engineering jobs.

So I took my years of experience and put it to work doing what I knew how to do. I had re-written the OS for the Commodore 64 computer and designed several updates for it that were very sellable, so I opened my own Commodore 64 repair business. I traveled the area visiting every Commodore computer club and demonstrating my own C-64 and my enhancements. Almost immediately I was busy 24x7, repairing and enhancing C-64's and 1541 Disk Drives.

I printed up business cards which I handed out wherever possible and circulated flyers, advertising my business. I was in a ready market and almost overnight I was the C-64 Guru of Central Florida. That carried me through till I was able to gain meaningful employment, as a Main Frame operator for the county.

When there is not an open path before you, , , then make your own path. Don't sit around and wait for someone else to make that path for you. Eh?

If you do, wait for someone else to open the path for you, you may one day be one of those guys standing next to the entrance to the Interstate, holding a sign, "homeless, will work for food".

    It's up to you......

    :cool
