Hi guys. Well, after the "black screen of death" (you guys helped get me back up and running :highfive) I installed Windows XP using a borrowed disc. When I try to open Word (2000) I am asked to provide the CD Key number. Problem...the key number on the package the CD came in doesn't work. I've tried all the key finders with no luck. Anyway I can "borrow" a key number from somebody...or is there a free update somewhere?

Thanks in advanced for any help or info!

Hmmm...I have the CD key, it's on the back of the folder holding the CD. I used Belarc, and the key matches. Then I used your suggestion, Jalapeno, and it came up with the exact same key. However, when I type this number into the box on the pop-up when I attempt to open Word, it says it's incorrect. (Don't know if this is of any importance, but all my other Office programs will open with no problem. It's just Word that asks for this CD Key.)
    Any other suggestions? :cry

Thanks Major. I checked numerous times to make sure I was typing it in correctly. Hope somebody has an idea. It's very frustrating not being able to access Word.

I had the exact same problem that you're currently having a few years back, when I had to do a complete Windows XP reinstall as well as reinstalling Microsoft Office 2000. I fixed the problem by uninstalling Microsoft Word (only) and then reinstalling it again.

Failing that you may have to contact Microsoft directly. These two links might help.

Thanks COMP! Now, how do I install ONLY word? Does it give me that option when I insert the XP Home Installation CD?

You should have the option of uninstalling; then reinstalling the Microsoft Word program after you insert the Microsoft Office installation CD (not the Windows XP Home reinstall disc). In my case I was using Microsoft Office 2000 Professional which came with two CD's in a CD case which had the product key sticker on it.

Important Note: You're definitely going to need the Microsoft Office 2000 product key if you're planning on uninstalling/reinstalling the Word program. Normally, the product key is on a sticker attached to the inside of your CD case or located with the manual that came with Office 2000. The numbers and letters displayed by the program represent the Microsoft Office 2000 product key. The product key should be formatted like xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx-xxxxx - (five sets of five letters and numbers).

If you've lost your product key, don't worry. It's located in the registry but it's encrypted, so you might need some help finding it.

The following link should help: How To Find the Microsoft Office 2000 Product Key Code

    Good Luck...

While good advice, Compuable, key finders do not work on Windows 2000 and Office 2000. I know from painful personal experience.

so dazedandconfuzed don't waste time looking for a key finder for Office 2000.

I hope the reinstall of Word works for you.

In that case try using Belarc Advisor to retrieve the Microsoft Office 2000 Product Key.

I just checked an older Belarc Advisor Profile (.mht file) that I saved from my Windows XP computer and it listed the following Software Licenses and Product Keys, etc. (as well as a lot of other useful information about that computer).

Microsoft - Digital Image Standard 2006 Editor
Microsoft - Digital Image Standard 2006 Library
    Microsoft - Internet Explorer
    Microsoft - Office 2000 Disc 2
    Microsoft - Office 2000 Professional
    Microsoft - WebFldrs XP
Microsoft - Windows XP Home Edition
    Microsoft - Word 2002
    Microsoft - Works
    Microsoft - Works 8.0
    Microsoft - Works Suite 2006

    Good Luck...

Belarc will not retrieve Office 2000 keys on Windows 2000. I have Belarc printouts for a few windows 2K computers I own. The Office 2000 software license shows but not the serial number needed to reinstall it.
