Hello. I need suggestions. I run freenas on my fileserver, and am having to reboot it several times a week. I'm pretty sure it's a hardware issue. I'm moderately tech savvy. Certainly not a full blown IT guy :)

I downloaded memtest and made a bootable cd. The memory is fine.

I'd like to test motherboard and cpu next, but am having a problem finding a free program to test these, that can be burned to a bootable cd. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

There is a program I've heard about called Prime95 which will stress your cpu for you and report results. It comes in both 32 and 64-bit versions. Google for it.

Here's another program from an earlier thread (credit to MG specialist zapp for the original post). Haven't used it myself yet; however it appears to have good reviews on sourceforge:

    http://sourceforge.net/projects/inq/

Depending on the errors causing the reboots, I would also focus on hard drives and/or any add-in HDD controller/RAID cards as possible suspects. Quickie tests (such as S.M.A.R.T. and chkdsk) don't always catch all issues. The best bet is to do a long/deep test using mfr. specific test suites such as WD Data Lifeguard or Seagate's SeaTools (most major drive mfr's test software is available free, either at the mfr's support site or in the Major Geek's download section).

    Hope this helps :)

Let us know what you find.

How old the the machine you running it on?

It could be failing hardware. I'd check the PSU.

Diagnostic tools are a load of tosh! Most of the time they are free to download and install but cost $40 to do anything with!

You're much better of getting yourself a copy of Prime 95 as above and run small FFT's to test the CPU, then Blend test to test CPU + RAM. The best way to test the MB is just general use, something like gaming would be ideal.

Why do you keep having to reboot? Is it locking up?
