Browser is locking up, and getting a couple of errors on start up. Can someone please suggest a decent freeware complete diagnostic program. I'm running Win98SE? Thanks. Ed.

Nick thanks, I've been checking the list out and I hoping someone could help me cut to the chase. PC-Wizard looks interesting. Thanks again. I'll check it out. Ed.

Win98, try running CMD and type sfc /scannow
or just do a Windows over Windows install.
    How to Reinstall Windows
    To reinstall Windows:

Start Windows, and then insert the Windows 98 CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.
Click Browse This CD, and then double-click Setup.exe.
Follow the instructions to complete the Windows Setup procedure.

Note: If Windows does not start and you need to run Setup from an MS-DOS prompt, click the Installing Windows 98 From MS-DOS link on the following Microsoft Web site:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;179756
How to Troubleshoot After the Installation Procedure
After the installation procedure is finished, you may need to use the following steps:

    Replace updated Microsoft files.
You may need to reinstall some of the Microsoft updated files on your computer. To update these files, click the Product Updates link on the following Microsoft Web site:
    http://update.microsoft.com
    Reinstall Outlook Express
When you reinstall Windows 98, Microsoft Outlook Express 4.x may be installed on your computer. If you were previously using Microsoft Outlook Express 5 or later, you may need to reinstall the program.

    Thanks foogoo,

Unfortunately I don't have the original cd's. Win98SE came installed. I'll try running the scannow command but I've already scanned the hard drive from windows. Will also try the updates.

I'm also going to reinstall IE.

    Thanks. Ed

Thanks guys, For some reason it wouldn't let me run sfc /scannow. I tried it from a couple of prompts, command and windows, and C:\. Any reason why it wouldn't let me run the sfc /scannow?? But I did run the system file checker, which might be the same thing. I'm stuck with the OS for now, but will probably put the most recent IE on it that I can. I'll check the cab files, and maybe I can reinstall Win98 over itself if the .exe file is there.

Surfed last night with no problems. Thanks. Ed.

Correct: SFC = System File Checker.
