Hello neighbor (I just moved here from Malware Removal) :-D

I have been helped by Chaslang to remove an MBR infection. If you need to view that post, look for this title: PLEASE. I'm BEGGING! Need MAJOR help! Redirect to pages asking for VERY personal...

I still have a few issues, which I had outlined in a thread to Chaslang:

As I and my husband are self-employed, each with a different website, not being able to send photos in emails or post new photos on our websites is a major problem.

A few questions:

1. Should I be concerned about that "The volume is dirty" report?

2. May I begin removing unwanted programs now?

Thanks in advance for your help!

First off ,has Chaslang certified the entire machine clean?

I know this may be a stupid question, but it is worth checking.

Have you tried any of the solutions on the MS website for "volume is dirty"?

Regarding the browser problem, what version of IE are you running? What happens if you run IE with no add-ons, (go to start, accessories, system tools, and you'll find it).

From a command prompt, run ipconfig /flushdns
Note the space b/n ipconfig the /.

Also, run cCleaner and go to control panel, select Internet Explorer, and on the first page, delete everything it lets you. Then go to the security tab and tap "reset" and do the same under the advanced tab.:wave

Not yet. I went there, there was so much info...now I have a headache! :(

I feel like a complete idiot...I don't know and I can't find anyplace on my pc that tells me. :-o

Same thing as before, i.e "This tab has been recovered. A problem with this page has caused IE to close and reopen the tab." Then, another screen with:
Internet Explorer has stopped trying to restore this website. It appears that the website continues to have a problem."

I'll follow your instuctions below and see what happens.

There isn't an Internet Explorer icon in my control panel.

No IE icon in controlpanel??
What about when you just click start, either in the start menu or if you go to all programs, you should find internet explorer. Right click on it and select properties, then delete everything from the opening tab and then :wavedo the resets.

No Internet Explorer. There is an icon for Internet Options.

I do have IE when I click start. After I click properties, the only thing on the General tab with an option to delete is "browsing history". On the Security tab I clicked "Reset all zones to default level" and on the Advanced tab I clicked "Reset".

The problem still exists! A balloon message saying "This tab has been recovered. A problem with this page has caused IE to close and reopen the tab."

Then, an error screen saying: "We were unable to return you to live.com." :cry

And what happens if you boot into safe mode with networking, usually by tapping the F8 key on startup? Does IE work then? And in internet options, what is set as your home page, is it www.live.com. Try setting it to www.majorgeeks.com.

What kind of internet connection, wired or wireless?

Click start, run, type in cmd, and in the black window type
ping www.majorgeeks.com
What happens?

I have a broadband highspeed wired connection.

My homepage was set to www.google.com. I changed it to www.live.com. Still no luck.

Same problem.

Same problem.

Same problem.

I'm using my AOL connection right now. Ever so often my screen is freezing up and I have to reboot.

I looked at some of your thread in the malware forum and was left with the impression that a reinstall may be necessary, not uncommon after bad infections. And I believe you said you have your data saved somewhere.

Are you willing to do a reinstall? Do you have a disk or a recovery partition on your HD?:wave:wave

You can spend maybe two hours on a reinstall and literally days on trying to diagnose and repair a system.:)

Yes, I did back up my important files on DVD's and at mozy.com.

I will do anything to fix this darn PC!

Where would I look to see if I have a recovery partition on my HD? The only CD I have is "Windows XP Home Edition" which I borrowed from my

daughter. I purchased my PC directly from Dell, and a CD was not included when it arrived.

When it is booting, press ctrl and tap the F11 key, this will get you to the recovery partition. Here, you should see choices to repair or install, or some such language. Choose install, if prompted to do quick or full format, choose full. You may need your Windows key, it's on a label on your box, but I don't think you'll be asked for it.
Then just follow the instructions to reinstall the OS, ALL data on the machine will be gone, but you've got it saved somewhere.
Then perform all of the updates from MS. Check if it installed a trial AV, if yes uninstall that, post back here for more instructions then.:wave:wave

Hello. Long time, no post! :)

I am using my old Gateway desk top.

I followed your instructions, and when I clicked "Install" it told me to insert my CD. I did that, it downloaded the files and then I rebooted. But then all I got was the Dell splash screen. I clicked F2 to change it so it would boot from the CD, but all I get now is a black screen with an error message saying that there was a "floppy diskette seek failure" and to strike the F1 key. That just takes me back to the Dell splash screen with the F2 and F12 choices. A few times it has also given me an error message that says something about the boot stops at [wake].

Is my Dell fried??? :cry
