Need help and don't know what the problem is!

Hi Guys,

My computer is not working well at all and I really don't know what the problem is. I have Compaq and have just upgraded to Windows XP. It has a fat 32 and I have heard that there is another system that works better with XP.

Here's what's happening. My computer keeps freezing up and I cannot get it to run a complete disk defrag. My husband put a partition in the hard drive and I'm not sure why, but I feel that this is where we are having the problem.

Please tell me what to do so that you can take a look and see if you can spot the problem.

You have FAT32 which was the Windows 98 filing system and was replaced by NTFS with the arrival of Windows 2000 (actually Windows NT, but who ever used NT? ) Win2000 and WinXP have the option of running in FAT32 for increased compatibilty with older programs; MSDOS based applications pretty much have to be run on a FAT system. You can convert your FAT32 system to NTFS by using a simple command. See this link for details: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314097/EN-US/ You will get a prompt saying something about the drive being in use. Do not force a dismount, but answer yes when it asks if you want to schedule the conversion for your next restart. Then type exit and press Enter. Then reboot the PC. Your FAT will be converted to NTFS provided there are no drive errors. If you get an error, visit this link:

BTW- you probably NEED to run the chkdsk to get the drive to finish defragging. Maybe do all this first, before converting to NTFS...
