    okay heres what i did

i put the live cd in the drive booted my system and it entered the installer

when the cd came up i selected live cd and i saw a progress bar, when the progress bar was complete the nvidia logo came up (the brand of my video card)

this is where my problem came, after the nvidia logo dissapeared a blue screen came up with small white text asking me for localhost login what is the login mame and password

In a liveCD environment you generally login with username:root password:root

if this works then my hat goes off to you grease monkey if it doesn't then i might try another distro

already tried installing ubuntu and after all the text stuff went away the screen went black

i might not try to install it again but thanks i think this distro is the one i'll be chatting on skype and playing frets on fire in no time

just so i can make it clear to myself is what i am doing as explained above going to install it on my hd

Look in the repositories for a program called ENVY. It will help install the best driver for your system.

running the LiveCD will boot you into the OS off the CD, It won't install to the hard drive till you ask it to.
Most liveCD's I've used will have a link on the desktop that you must click on to install. This will start a wizard that will guide you through it.

If, after entering the username / password you are stuck at the command line with no desktop you may need to manually start the windows manager.

I think this should do it:

    Code:
    startx &
I highly recommend reading some of the info here:
    http://linux-newbie.sunsite.dk/index.html
It will help with alot of the basics

Did you set up a user name and password and did you set a root pw in PCLOS?

I always select VESA safe mode, that is the safest video mode so you don't get a black screen.
You can tweak it later; for now, you just want something loaded to see how it works on the hardware.

skype should be found within the Package Manager aka Synaptic.

In the toolbar at the bottom of the screen there is an S shaped Icon, red on top, black on bottom. Click on it and you will be prompted for the root password, no internet use in root please. Enter the password, OK, and the Synaptic package manager will open. In the tool bar click Reload. This will check the Repository for any updated packages. Try to use only one Repository at a time, I am currently using the indiana.edu one. To view the list of repositories click Settings. Skype has four listings at the moment, one is a recorder. Component listing is nonfree, version is 2.0.0.72-3. Have you enabled shorewall, firewall? You can do that through the Administration Center, Security. Root password required as a user for that one too.
