I would really like to access more of my CPU power. I'm attaching my current autoruns list. If you've worked with disabling any of these or are familiar with the function of these exe's and dll's, please give me advice.

    These are the computer specs:
    motherboard is a MSI MS-6712 1.0
    1.85 gigahertz AMD Athlon XP
    128 kilobyte primary memory cache
    256 kilobyte secondary memory cache
    Bus Clock: 166 megahertz
BIOS: American Megatrends Inc. Version 07.00T 04/02/01

    1024 Megabytes Installed Memory
    Memory Modules:
    Slot '0' has 512 MB
    Slot '1' has 512 MB
    Slot '2' is Empty

    2 Hard Drives (250gb each)

    56X CD-ROM
OPTORITE DVD RW DD0405 [CD-ROM drive]
3.5" format removeable media [Floppy drive]

On the Autorun list, this is what I have already disabled:

    ATIPTA
gcasServ [I use Spy Sweeper, so I don't want MS AntiSpyware running at the same time.]
    OPSE reminder [nag screen]
    UpdReg [nag screen]
Logitech SetPoint.Ink [Took the icon out of the tray, but I need to figure out what else can go.]
    Microsoft AntiSpyware Service Hook
    Display Panning CPL Extension
Windows Messenger [it snuck in again]
AtiExtEvent [found confirmation this was safe to take out]

I'm pretty sure there is more ATI stuff that can be disabled. I don't use the computer for gaming. Just good quality video/DVD display, no need for superfast imaging as in gaming. No need to have the functions running before I call them up.

So how much of the WMP do I need to keep for whatever reason? I use foobar2000 as my default CD player and Nero for burning CDs. I do on occasion use Media Classic Player. Sometimes it comes up to play a podcast. I don't know if that's because it's necessary, or if it's because I haven't shut down some WMP funtion in the list. I never authorize WMP 9 when it tries to go through a startup screen, but I haven't taken it out yet.

I'd like to get the Epson out of the autorun memory hog category and use it as I do my default Canon printer, so that it uses memory only when I print.

I'm sure there's lots more that could be said. Any advice is very appreciated. Thank you.

The stuff you have disabled is OK.

Unfortunately, the AutoRuns log is very hard to decipher because of the formatting (a screenshot of the WinLogon tab would have been better).

I would suggest you take a look at StartUp Control Panel, which will add an applet in your Control Panel.

It provides a simple way of checking and removing what's loading at startup, but it's also simple to undo any edits if needed.

I don't understand what you mean by "Logitech SetPoint.Ink [Took the icon out of the tray, but I need to figure out what else can go.]" ?

It's only a shortcut. You can put it anywhere you put shortcuts, eg on your desktop, quick launch or if you don't need it then delete it.

If StartUp Control Panel isn't any simpler, then try the screenshot as suggest, or your StartUp tab in msconfig (start, run).

Yes, right. I wasn't thinking on the Logitec. I've attached the Winlogon. My capture mechanism is a bit primitive, so it took a while to get this cropped. This is the Winlogon portion of the Autoruns.

    Hope this helps. Thanks. :)

Everything looks pretty good. About as trim as you can hope for.

You can go through your Services if you like, but only do one at a time, then leave it for a while.

Don't do them all at once or you may cripple your system.

Once you've done all that, uninstall any programs you don't use, and clean any old or temp files using something like CCleaner followed by a defrag.

Thanks, that's great. Appreciate the link very much and the StartUp Control Panel. :) Have you used SysInternals program "autoruns"? That's what I've been using. I ask because I wonder if you've compared it to the StartUp Control Panel, whether you find the Control Panel has anything not in the SysInternals app.

I love CCleaner. My father just thanked me for it again today. Of course, I sent him here to get it! :)

Yeah, I've got AutoRuns, but I don't use it as much as StartUp Control Panel.

I only use AutoRuns when I want to investigate something, as it's a lot more detailed.

For basic stuff like deleting start up programs, I use StartUp Control Panel.

It doesn't have anything extra that AutoRuns doesn't, but for everyday use it's far simpler and easier.

Say hello to Mr Gektumi. :)

Mr. Gektumi (who of course had a different last name—and would have undoubtedly chosen a different avatar) is deceased, so I will more often speak of Col. Gektumi, my father.

So here is the reason I kept coming back to Major Geeks in my web wanderings. Khaki and olive drab is not a serious design problem. ;)

Thanks for the tip on StartUp Control Panel. I have yet to try it, but it’s downloaded and ready to go on. :)
