I have a good friend that has gotten herself into some trouble. After reading her email I told her that she might want to consider buying a new machine but that I would post the issue here first to see what you all think

PLease let me know if there is something I can do to help her out.

    Thanks

Here is a copy of the email she sent me

We switched motherboards and now it won't acknowledge the monitor or keyboard. The power supply "test" button shows everything is working but nothing comes on. We put my old one and all my stuff back and nothing :( Did I lose it all? I am flustered as you can imagine.

If she just swapped Motherboards, and did not do a "Repair" of Windows, then it will still be looking for the old hardware. Whenever upgrading stuff like motherboards, always back up the hard drive, and you can either do a New install, or a Repair Install.

The original copy of XP is tied to the other motherboard, which means that you have to do a new install, or repair install.

    Welcome to MajorGeeks.

Just get her to format and install Windows again, and make sure she has the latest drivers for her motherboard. (as well as a firewall and antivirus. Checkout the Malware forum)

If unsure of the hardware, use EVEREST after you have installed Windows.

This will tell you what the hardware is, and supply links for drivers.

So does this mean that this is a repairable issue ? She already has a new computer but I'm curious now if something like that can be fixed by a reformat.

    Thanks

Seeing as how I am grumpy today i will try to keep the cynacism to a min.... but wasn't the original problem here the fact that it wouldnt power on anymore......? you show me how a format will cure that and ill give you a nickle:) ..... just wondering

It wasnt that it wouldnt power on it was that it wasnt recognizing the monitor and keyboard once the new motherboard was put in I believe. Sorry if I wasnt clear about that in my original post :)

hehe me too. I was just wondering how to reformat if you couldnt get a monitor to come on or a keyboard and tell what was happening. But anyways I appreciate the info. I'll forward it along in case they ever decide to try and bring it back to life.

    Thanks again !!!
