Please find the remaining scans, including HJT attached. I did try to run the VUNDO.exe repair tool, but it was unable to remove vtsqq.dll and qqstv.ini even after a reboot. However, some other files were shown to have been deleted using the utility. Thanks for your help!

    Welcome to Majorgeeks!

Start by downloading two tools we will need

    - Process Explorer

    - Pocket KillBox

Extract them to their own folder somewhere that you will be able to locate them later.

Now Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 9

Now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Make sure you have rebooted in Normal Mode (do not open any other processes)

    Now Run Process Explorer

In the top section of the Process Explorer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of vtsqq.dll once and then click the kill button. After you have killed all of the vtsqq.dll under winlogon click ok. (If you do not find the dll, just continue on.)

Next double click on explorer.exe and again click once on each instance of vtsqq.dll and kill it. (If you do not find the dll, just continue on.)

    Now just exit Process Explorer.

Run HijackThis and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0676CC61-CDC5-447e-AAFC-9D886EC820EB} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\tmp5.tmp.dll (file missing)
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {0D59B457-F4D0-4043-BFBA-3A2C2831DFE1} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\vtsqq.dll
    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {E8DEC8EA-8D80-4ec6-AF6B-190A765F1D2F} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\pmnll.dll (file missing)
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\qttask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BearShare] "C:\Program Files\BearShare\BearShare.exe" /pause
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background
    O20 - AppInit_DLLs: c:\windows\system32\gebyvwt.dll
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: itiroin - itiroin.dll (file missing)
    O20 - Winlogon Notify: vtsqq - C:\WINDOWS\System32\vtsqq.dll

NOTE: HJT will popup an error about the AppInit_DLLs line. Ignore it and click OK to continue.

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixme.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now run Pocket Killbox by doubleclicking on killbox.exe
Choose Tools > Delete Temp Files and click Delete Selected Temp Files.
Then after it deletes the files click the Exit (Save Settings) button.
NOTE: Pocket Killbox will only list the added files it is able to find on the system. So when you do the below, if some files do not show in the list after pasting them in, just continue.

    Select:
    • Delete on Reboot
    • then Click on the All Files button.
    • Please copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\WINDOWS\system32\vtsqq.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\qqstv.ini
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\qqstv.ini2
    c:\windows\system32\gebyvwt.dll
    • Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose Paste from Clipboard.
    • Click the red-and-white Delete File button. Click Yes at the Delete on Reboot prompt.
If you receive a PendingFileRenameOperations prompt, just click OK to continue (But please let me know if you receive this message!).

If Killbox does not reboot just reboot your PC yourself.

After reboot locate the below folder and delete if found:
    C:\Program Files\BearShare
    C:\Program Files\VSAdd-in

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. GetRunKey
    2. ShowNew
    3. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

  4. JGW93

    JGW93 Private E-2

Executed the procedure with only a few exceptions. I deleted about three instances of vtsqq.dll using Process Explorer. I was not able to find an exact match for the vtsqq.dll BHO that you listed in HJT, but there was one vtsqq.dll BHO there that was slightly different so I left it alone. All other lines in HJT were found and fixed. I could not see all the lines that I pasted into Killbox (only two were visible after pasting from clipboard). I deleted the VSAdd-in folder and did not find a Bearshare folder.

One odd thing is that McAfee now tells me that Windows Update is disabled. Is this a problem?

While doing a little surfing before making this post, I did not get any annoying popups like I had been getting. So far so good...see attached logs. Thanks!

It's the same line! The difference is just due to the fact that the file is missing because we deleted it. Fix the below line too:

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {44A885FA-8CFB-48D6-887C-797D05D31017} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\vtsqq.dll (file missing)

The use Killbox to delete the below files:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ganjmrlk.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ocrlpyfw.dll
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\ovmddfae.dll

Then after a reboot, new logs from HJT and ShowNew.

    How are things working now?

Sorry for misunderstanding on deletion of vtsqq.dll BHO--it's fixed now. Used Killbox to kill three more files as requested. System seems to be running without malware, but a little slower with CounterSpy, Defender, etc. running in the background. New logs are attached as requested. Thanks.

If CounterSpy is the free trial version from the READ & RUN ME then uninstall it. If CounterSpy is a paid version then keep it and uninstall Windows Defender.

Your log is clean. If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix you can delete the ComboFix.exe file and associated C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    4. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    7. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

I greatly appreciate all the help you have provided. I have a few questions as I finish the cleanup and housekeeping items:

    1) Should I keep any of these programs around considering I now have the McAfee Antivirus 2007 installed?: HJT, Process Explorer, MS Malicious Software Removal Tool, Killbox, Spybot S&D 1.4.

    2) "Kodak Easy Share" for one of our digital cameras does not seem to run correctly from non-Admin accounts. Is it known to be a malware program or something I would be better off deleting? I do not trust the way it always wants to run in the background and connect to the internet.

    3) MajorGeeks recommends FireFox instead of IE, but also mentions latest version has had a few issues. Should I hold off on this and will FireFox cause me to lose any functionality on the internet? I don't know much about it...

Spybot should definitely be kept on your PC and keep it updated and after each update, check for new Immunizations.

It would not hurt you to keep all the other programs around just in case you run into problems again. Also MS Malicious Software Removal Tool is part of the OS anyway and will be installed or recommended to be installed when you get Windows Updates.

It is not malware. You probably don't need it to run at startup because you can probably just run it as needed.

I don't know of any major issues with FireFox. What are you referring too? It works just fine and will not cause you to lose any functionality on the internet. In fact it will add some.

Regarding Firefox, I was referring to these comments off the page to do the download:

Editors Note: Just as an FYI to you all. There have been a number of bug reports in this version 2.0 Final - Ranging from lost bookmarks and broken tabs to complete instability. Others report no problems at all.

Okay! I forgot about that note. I have it running on about 8 PCs and have experience no issues myself. It's up to you what you would like to do. The previous version (1.5.0.8) may be still available at some sites if you want to use it instead. In fact you can get it in the below link:

    download it here.
