I'm really hoping you guys can help me - I'm another victim of the latest popular MS Juan Vundo. I got it while downloading a bootleg Beatles concert on Sharebee.com (download site) using IE. I know better than to use IE, but stupidly I was doing something else in FF at the time and thought "what're the chances". Well, the chances are good....

I've tried every tool in the box, and after I ran a SmitFraud scan now I also have the annoying "Windows Security Alerts" in the lower right which also won't go away either.

SuperAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes find the MS Juan most of the time and say they will delete on reboot but it comes back. It's weird, sometimes after a reboot I immediately look in the registry and MS Juan will be gone, but if I launch IE, it appears right away. Sometimes I can delete the MS Juan entry in the registry and sometimes I can't (error), but either way it will always reappear on reboot. Of course, when I'm in IE the MS Juan launches IE windows that go to sites trying to give me more malware....

One file that keeps coming up on HijackThis scans and even was supposedly deleted in my ComboFix scan is called "ltnqmw.dll". That file seems to be involved with the whole thing.

I'll attach my logs here and in another post.

Here's my MGLogs.zip and a screen shot of the annoying "Windows Security Alerts" thing that starts up and stays in my bottom-right Quicklaunch bar.

I'm at my wits-end here, thanks very much in advance for your time and help everyone!

Your troubles started on Oct. 11th.

    We will do this first:

Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following ( be sure to re-enable when we are finished):

    Use add/remove programs to uninstall:
    Viewpoint Media Player

Now download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the "Input script here:"
    part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

Now uninstall SAS and also delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip.

Go back to the Read and Run First instructions and re-download both SAS and the MGTools.exe.

Attach the new logs for SAS and the C:\MGLogs.zip.

First off, thanks for your reply Tim!

Between my initial post and your response I kept doggedly trying to use SAS and MB to kick this thing. I succeeded in stopping MS Juan from appearing in my registry and I think I cleared that part out - mostly by following your advice to another post and running both programs continuously in Safe Mode on all user accounts. But after seeing your response I obviously see that other stuff needs to be removed so I followed your instructions.

My new SAS and MGTools logs are attached. And I also finally realized that the Windows Security Alerts balloon is actually legit. I was suspicious because I read about stories of Malware spoofing this function and had a friend who fell for it and screwed his 'puter up royally. I now realize that SmitFraud disabled the MS Firewall function which causes the legitimate Windows Security Alert balloon to pop up.

Overall my computer is already running noticeably faster but hopefully with your advice I can rid myself of these last nasties.

BTW - I read a bit about Viewpoint Media Player. Seems part legit and part Adware. Wikipedia says it's an AOL program and I seems to me that it's kinda shady.

Your logs are basically clean...we will just do a few things:

Run this: Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:
    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Now tell me if you are having any other malware issues.

Things seem to be running fine but I still followed your last instructions. I think I'm in the clear now.

I did install Windows Defender. I see on other posts that you recommend removing most anti-Mal/Spyware as they are often system hogs. What would be your best recommendation for what I should keep on my computer and what I should remove? As you saw I have Norton AntiVirus already but obviously it's full of holes.

You guys do a wonderful thing here - thanks for all your help!

    This is what we recommend:

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommed you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They are useful as backup scanners. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)

    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

Thanks again Tim for all your help! I followed your advice and I'm pretty sure that I'm all clear now. I'm also going to buy a new router with a better firewall (hardware).
