i have ran all scans as listed in your "read & run" thread. although it has removed most of the vundo trojan, one file was left behind that will not move, clean or delete. i could not run the scans in safe mode due to the screen resolution being to big and unable to adjust. also bit defender and panda active scan froze up and was up able to complete either scans. pls help.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Now Disable Spybot's TeaTimer per the READ ME instructions
    • Run Spybot and click Mode
    • Select Advanced Mode.
    • Then click Tools and select Resident.
    • Now in the right window pane, uncheck TeaTimer.
    • Also while this is open, in the left column now select IE Tweaks
    • and then in the right pane make sure all the Miscellaneous locks are unchecked.
    • Now quit Spybot!
You did not run GetRunKey and ShowNew properly. You must make sure you followed the instructions and extracted the files from the ZIP files and also make sure to check for the error messages mentioned on the download pages for GetRunKey and ShowNew. I will ask for new logs below but you must make sure you have installed the tools properly.
    1. Download this file - combofix.exe
    2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    3. When finished, it will produce a log ( c:\combofix.txt ) for you. Attach this log to your next reply
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. GetRunKey
    2. ShowNew
    3. HJT
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

You did not disable Teatimer as requested before getting the logs so you will need to start over again and get new logs.

You also did not attach the log from ComboFix.

While I look thru all of your logs, do the below.

    Uninstall these:
    Java(TM) 6 Update 2
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment 6 Update 1
    Norton Security Scan
    Sunbelt CounterSpy

I also see the below installed:
    Trend Micro Anti-Spyware
    Windows Defender
    Yahoo! Anti-Spy

Is the TrendMicro Antispyware a paid version?

Drag that icon to your Recycle Bin and drop it there.

    • Then right click your Desktop and select Properties.
    • Select the Desktop tab
    • Select the Customize Desktop... button
    • On the next form on the General tab uncheck the Internet Explorer check box under the Desktop icons area
    • Then click OK
    • Now you should be back on the Display Properties form where you should click the Apply button.
    • Now again select the Customize Desktop... button
    • On the next form on the General tab put a check in the Internet Explorer check box under the Desktop icons area
    • Then click OK
    • Now you should be back on the Display Properties form where you should click the Apply button.
    • Now OK your way out.
Is the icon back on your Desktop (it may be in a different location)? If so, did the color change back?

    no change.

  26. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

I'm not sure whatelse to try. It is more than likely another registry setting where it has been changed. I thought what I gave in message # 22 would correct it.

Do you have an IE icon in your Quick Lauch bar? If so what color is it?

  27. ivye3

    ivye3 Private E-2

no i dont have ie on my quick launch bar. my system is running a lot better since the fixes, i just want to know if its safe to use ie regardless of the icon color. is it something to be concerned about?

  28. chaslang

chaslang MajorGeeks Admin - Master Malware Expert Staff Member

It is safe as long as it is really bringing up IE.

You could try asking if anyone in the Software Forum has any additional ideas on how to get the correct icon back. It seems like it is not using the embedded icon in the C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe file. But how to get the Desktop IE icon's properties set back to use this is the question. Other Desktop icons allow you to choose the icon to use but the normal IE desktop icon does not.

  29. ivye3

    ivye3 Private E-2

well it does bring up ie normally like before. color isnt a big problem, i just didnt want for it to be a underlying virus. other than that my system is running great.:)

    That's good!

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, C:\WINDOWS\nircmd.exe, C:\combofix.txt and C:\ComboFix-quarantined-files.txt logs that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used SmitFraudFix, you can delete all files and folders related to it now including the c:\rapport.txt log.
    5. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    6. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    7. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    8. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    9. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    10. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    11. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
