My church filmed a training session using a Panasonic PV-GS500 Camcorder. They gave me the camera to pull the video off the tape and create a DVD to play.

I have three computers (two Laptops and one Desktop) all running Windows 10 (Version 10.0.17134 build 17134). I'm working mostly on my newest laptop an HP SN-44r2L0. I purchased a 1384 to USB cable to connect the camcorder to the computer.

When I plug them in I get an error saying that "the last device connected has malfunctioned and Windows does not recognize it." I've tried to update drivers but it says the driver is the most up to date. I also tried to find the Media Studio that came with the camera. Having found it, I tried to install it and it wouldn't install without the camera being recognized.

    Any suggestions??

Thank you for the suggestion but regardless of the software, I can't get windows 10 to recognize the camera in any mode.

I discovered an error code 43 on the driver. "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)"

Since I see reviews of this Camcorder from 2007, I suspect you'll need someone with a much older version of Windows to get that 12 year old camcorder recognized.

Looks like you need to run the setup CD in compatibility mode because the drivers are for XP and Vista. You also need to connect to a USB 2 port and not a USB 3 port.

So, I tried all the USB Ports on my laptops with no success. Is there a way to tell which version of USBs I have? The installation software starts but since it can't see the Camcorder, it can't finish loading. I can't get any drivers to load so it will be recognized. Windows interrupts and says the best drivers are loaded but it still will not recognize them

Open the Device Manager and expand Universal Serial Bus Controllers.
If your USB port name contains "Universal Host", your port is version 1.1. If the port name contains both "Universal Host" and "Enhanced Host", your port is version 2.0. If the port name contains "USB 3.0", your port is version 3.0.

Find someone that has an old computer running XP or Vista. It doesn't have to connect to the internet just be able to boot up and run. Install the camcorder software on that computer and use it.
Explain to the church that you can't do what is required on your computer.

I spent the better part of the evening firing up my old Vista Laptop and it had the same issue, Windows doesn't recognize the Camcorder. Thanks for all the assists, but I'm surrendering and returning the Camcorder and tapes. I will pass on any follow on information and I'll look for a machine with a fire wire card (had one years ago and have the cable but no card anymore). I'm guessing the cable is the issue at this point. Thanks to all.

It looks like the only option is to connect the Camcorder via it's DV port to a PC's FireWire card.
Also, the software being used must recognize the Camcorder.
