I restarted my computer the other day and it now takes 20 minutes longer than before to start up. Once it gets to desktop, all my icons show up but nothing works. I have Avast and AVG anti spyware and spybot SD on my PC. Is there any way i can run then from say, MS DOS or whatever it is called. Even when i run the pc in Safe Mode, all that loads is the safe mode words in each corner, no desktop. Please help. I hope i do not have to reformat. I was wondering if i could type say c:/avast.exe or something in ms dos????

    Hope omeone can help

You did not say what Windows OS you have?

Are you sure that you cannot run anything at all in normal boot mode or in safe mode?

From safe mode have you tried opening Task Manager and running things from it using File, New Task (Run...) ? Can you type in explorer.exe and get a desktop in safe mode?

If this is really true then there is not to much we can do for you because we would need you to run some tools and get us some logs so that we can help you. Thus if nothing runs you would have to use another PC to possibly make so specialized diagnostic boot disk with useful tools and an antivirus built in so that you can use this boot disk to help you fix your hard disk. Making and using this boot disk is really outside the scope of this forum though. Tools like below could be useful:

    Ultimate Boot CD (Basic)

Ok, sorry. I am running Windows XP media Center edition. In safe mode, no desktop appears. Just the safe mode words in the corners, black screen. In normal mode i log in and then the desktop appears like the one for windows 95. When I hit CTRL ALT Del, there are lots of tasks running but for some reason, where it usually says SYSTEM or DOOGS_69 beside each task, it is blank. Ill try what you said with the new task. If it still dont work, could you maybe guid me through with the boot disc operation? Thanks

Don't you get the Windows Welcome screen first where all user accounts are listed? Don't you have to login?

What/where are you referring to? Are you talking about something in Task Manager. You are going to have to slow down and explain yourself in greater detail step by step. Remember we cannot see your PC or what is going on. If you don't give us enough detail, it will only lead to more questions or the wrong diagnosis/solution. When you said CTRL-ALT-DEL above I thought you meant that is how you had your PC setup for security. You can setup a PC so that the Welcome Screen will not appear until CTRL-ALT-DEL is pressed. Then you have to choose the user account, enter the password, and then you get logged in. Sounds to me like you have no problems logging in. So I'm not really clear on why you say you cannot run anything or what you are really doing.

As I already mentioned, this is not something we can do in this forum. We just don't have the time for it and it is not a malware topic.

If you fixed a process that was loading with HJT, it will create a backup in its Backup folder.

Are you sure everything is truly normal and that you have no other malware? Most malware does not come alone these days.

As far as i know, it is gone. You wouldnt have believed how slow it was to boot after a restart. It literally took 20-25 minutes to get to the desktop. once i dleeted the file and the Spybot results, i rebooted and it ran like it was normal.

It is not unusal. We see this all the time. Even if the immediate symptom you experience is gone, I still think you should do a full malware check.
