Need Help- Viruses

    I know you are not to post before you do all the scans but I can't run them because of error messages. One of them is "Another program is currently using this file", and this one just started "Windows cannot find C:\windows\rundll32.exe". I don't know what else to do, I'm running his in safe mode now doing a scan, he has over 2 million data files in it. He is about the 5th owner. Is there any hope for this thing? Oh, it's a compaq presario 5000.:rolleyes:

    • Make sure you check version numbers and get all updates.
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gif Very Important: Make sure you tell us the results from running the tutorial...was anything found? Were you unable to complete any of the scans?...Were you unable to download any of the tools?...Did you do the on-line scans as suggested? etc.

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gifAfter doing ALL of the above and you still have a problem, make sure you have booted to normal mode and run the steps in the below thread to properly use HijackThis and attach the log:

    • Make sure you also rename HijackThis.exe as suggested in the procedures. Use analyse.exe for the new name. This is very important due to some new infections going around..
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/images/grenade.gifWhen you return to make your next post, make sure you attach the following logs and that you have run these scans in the following order too:
    • CounterSpy
    • AVG Antispyware log - ONLY IF NEEDED you were not able to run CounterSpy
    • Bitdefender - from step 6
    • Panda Scan - from step 6
    • runkeys.txt - the log from GetRunKey.bat
    • newfiles.txt - the log from ShowNew.bat
    • HijackThis
    NOTE: You can only attach 3 files in a single message so it will require that you use two messages to attach all of these logs!

    Hi, I can't download Major Geeks on his computer because C:\windows\rundll32.exe can't be found. Any other suggestions please?:confused:

    Could you elaborate a little please? Do you mean you can't get into Windows or you can't open anything?

    I can't get into windows, control panel, Add/Remove programs and I can't run any anti virus or it will freeze up. I have tried in safe mode too. If I can get this back to running maybe I can get on with the scans and logs.

    What happens when you power on your machine exactly??

    Does it boot to the boot screen?

    Does it login to Windows but the desktop doesn't load?

    Do you have your Windows disc?

    HI, here's the answers to your questions:
    1. Windows Me logo comes on- goes to boot screen-turns blue.
    Then error message: A required dll file is needed ASHBASE.DLL was not found
    testtest has caused an error in <unknown>
    testtest will now close
    Then desktop comes on with icons with this error message: Another program is currently using this file- C:\ Programs Files\common files\Microsoft Shared\ Works Shared\wkcalrem.exe
    PCTPTT has caused an error in PCTPTT.exe-PCTVOICE has caused an error in PCTPTT.exe
    If I click on anything in control panel or any icon this message comes up:
    Windows cannot find C:\Windows\rundll32.exe, when I click on search it comes up with : There are no results to display.
    He is connected to my computer with a Bellsouth modem and a Linksys router if that makes any difference. I don't have any disks for his puter at all.

    Ouch! Not good, well...since you can't get into Windows not much I can do for you. The only thing at this point I can suggest is posting in the Software Forum and possibly getting back into Windows. If you don't have any disc I'm afraid you may have to take it to a local computer shop and get a clean install.

    Post over in the Software Forum and explain to those guys what's going on and if they can get you into windows we can begin the cleaning.
