Need help with cleaning Google redirect

    About three weeks ago, I managed to get a particularly nasty cocktail of viruses and went through the READ & RUN ME FIRST from this site. It appeared to clear up the most obvious issues and I thought I was done. Since then, I've noticed that I still appear to have a Google redirect bug that either wasn't detected or is uncorrected damage from the original infection.

    Clicking links from Google searches frequently (but not always) redirects me to random alternate search sites or what appear to be malware sites. With persistence, I can use the back button and retry and eventually get to the appropriate site. I've since tried Spybot S&D and Ad-aware. Redirect is still there.

    Attached are the logs from running through READ & RUN ME FIRST, though nothing that any of these programs recongnized as malware appeared to be found. I still have the original logfiles from three weeks ago and can post those if requested.

    Thanks for any help.

    Logs from three weeks ago will not do us any good. You need to do new scans with the tools and you also need to download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

    Sorry, I wasn't clear in my original post. The attached logs are not from three weeks ago. The posted logs were generated immediately before starting this thread. I didn't post the older logs because I didn't think they would be much help, but thought I'd mention I still had those logs available if needed. I did not realize MGtools had been updated. I'll download the updated version and post that .zip file this evening.

    It has occurred to me that one possible solution would be to reenable IE and see if I can replicate the problem there and if not, simply look into how to completely remove Firefox (and any addons) and then reinstalling Firefox. I'll hold off on that till I get a reply here to avoid getting too far from the state the machine was in when the previous logs were generated.

    I went back and looked on the infected system and realized that late on June 9th, I had in fact redownloaded ALL the tools requested in the READ & RUN ME FIRST, including MGTools.

    So, after reviewing what I had done late Sunday, I believe the original logs posted in this thread are exactly the logs requested.

    Sorry but this is just not true. The logs all show the dates of what you ran. For example, you ran an outdated version of MGtools and the scan was run on May 18th.
    Code:
    *             GetRunKeys.Bat - (c) 01/28/2006 By Chaslang                    *

    *   04/07/2009 Version 2.37 - show Netsvcs value                             *

    Your other logs are also showing the same.
    From 5-18 thru 6-9 is 22 days. Thus the scans are over 3 weeks old. And all the above tools are now outdated.

    :-o

    Let me try this again. The most recent logs (from June 8th) are attached. Sorry for the confusion.

    Download The Avenger by Swandog469, and save it to your Desktop.

    * Extract+ avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    * Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    * -Do not change any check box options!!
    * Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it into the Input script here: part of the window:

    * Now click the Execute button.
    * Click Yes to the prompt to confirm you want to execute.
    * Click Yes to the Reboot now? question that will appear when Avenger finishes running.
    * Your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    * A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt and it will popup for you to view when you login after reboot.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    Avenger was unable to delete several of the files in the script, so I've attached the avenger.txt log as well as the MGlogs.zip. The redirects seem to be less frequent, but they are still there.

    Not sure how much this will help, but it seems like I can successfully get to several sites from the google search results then I'll suddenly get several redirects, but I can get back to the google search results to try again. After several redirects, I'll get redirected to http:\\www.google.com\undefined. Once I get that redirect, the next attempt from my google search results is ALWAYS successful.

    As you can probably guess from the fact that all the files in the script are Firefox extensions, I do not get any redirects at all from IE7.

    Thanks for the help, but we're not quite there yet.

    Well how rude! Let's have Combo deal with them.

    Please disable all anti-virus and anti-spyware programs while we do the following (re-enable when you are finished):

    * Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
    If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    * Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    * If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    * Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below code box into it (make sure you scroll all the way down in the code box to get all lines selected ):
    Code:
    KILLALL::

    Folder::
    C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\extensions\{17CE9004-3FDF-49C3-A9A3-227C61F100B3}
    C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\extensions\{3AE23997-9C80-471A-97C3-0E793E3C0906}

    C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\extensions\{FBDBE16C-6B77-47F1-BBC7-E3445AE9BFB1}

    * Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    * At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    * You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    If it asks you to overide the prvevious file with the same name, click YES.
    * Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v666/sUBs/CFScriptB-4.gif
    * Follow the prompts.
    * When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    * I will ask for this log below

    Note:

    Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

    Now run the C:\MGtools\GetLogs.bat file by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator).

    Then attach the below logs:

    * C:\ComboFix.txt
    * C:\MGlogs.zip

    Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

    This session went much better! No problems encountered by ComboFix and I am unable to reproduce the redirect problem in Firefox. Much thanks for all the help.

    Logs are attached.

    I think I might know the answer to this question, but I'll ask anyway. How safe would you consider this machine now for things like online shopping / banking / etc.?

    Your logs are clean. This was not an infection that steals personal data. So you are fine to run online banking, etc. I would just make sure you follow these instructions:

    If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:

    1. We recommed you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no real time protection. They are useful as backup scanners. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.

      • Delete the C:\combofix folder from combofix (if it exists)

    3. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    4. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    5. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    6. You can delete the C:\MGtools folder and the C:\MGtools.exe file. You can also delete the C:\MGlogs.zip
    7. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning steps in the READ ME for your Window version and see the steps to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.

    8. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
