Need help with connectors on gtx280

I'm installing a 280 and just saw that the 8 pin on my cooler master psu does not work with the connection on the card.

Now there is an adapter, 2 six pins to 8 pin, but I still need a six pin for the card which I don't have. Must I use both 6 pins in order to make the 8 pin connection work or can I get by with one? I'm reluctant to experiment.

OK, I used the adapters to connect the power, I installed 181.20 drivers and set the fan speed (Riva Tuner) at 62%. Idle temp is 38-40c, but Assassins Creed crashes to desktop and Lost Planet had a fatal crash:

    D3DERR_NOTAVAILABLE:IRender->getDevice()->CreateTexture(mSurfaceSize.w

    ,mSurfaceSize.h,levelusage,(XFFORMAT)fmt,pool,&ptex,NULL)

I have no idea what that all means.

My card is BFG OC 1gig DDR3
    E8400 @3.6
    2gigs 1066 ram

My 4870 never had any of these problems and it was OC'd to 785/1090(?). Heat wasn't an issue with the Antec Nine Hundred case w/four fans and one on the large after market cooler 37c (core 1) and 33c (core 2).

After some searching, I Dl'd DirectX 9.0c package, but the ctd persists. I'm thinking of returning the BFG GTX280 to see if I can get refunded or a credit to wait for an EVGA 280 (what I wanted initially).

How many watts is your power supply? Are you running latest drivers?

    Thanks for responding guys,
I used the (overlooked) adapters in the box and got it up and running. My Cooler Master psu is 650watts with 54amps on the 12v rails and I've installed the latest drivers (181.20) as well as reinstalling the directx package because of a fatal error [D3DERR_NOTAVAILABE etc.]. Using Riva Tuner, I got my gpu temps down to 38c-40c idle and as far as I could see into the 60's-low 80's under load.

With all I'm able to do, the card still does not perform with stability so I reinstalled my old 4870 which has performed and is once again performing very well, until I can get another brand of the 280 (not the BFG). I've used EVGA in the past therefore I'll hold out for their 280. I went to get the EVGA but the assistant at the store said there was a mistake in the inventory and the card that was advertised was not there, hence I settled for the BFG.

Before I trek back to the store, I'd like to know if being literally thrown out of a game (after some weird glitch- the game jumped my character to another location in the midst of a battle) could be a psu problem. I don't know the power draw of these components, but if someone with the knowledge would give their input I'd appreciate it.

Psu Cooler Master 650w 54amps on 12v rails
    4- 120mm fans
    1- 200mm fan
    E8400 cpu
    1- Western Digital HD
    Asus P5Q SE2 mobo
BFG GTX280 OC - the connectors required that I connect one of the molex adapters on the same cable as one of the 120mm fans (a problem?).

Temp is not a problem. You could have got a bad card.

Yeah pclover, I hope it's not a bad card, but since my last post I went back to the store and talked with their tech guy and he said something that I had considered but in my frustration didn't do, that is to roll back the drivers to see if that might help.

If drivers aren't the issue, the store manager said I could return the card and get a gift certificate toward another purchase, namely a new GTX285. They informed me that the 295 is already in route so the 285 should not be far behind:) . I'm hoping to snag an EVGA this time since I've had great support from them in the past not to mention the possibility to step up.

So in short I'll reinstall the 280 with different drivers to see if it helps along with the new psu I picked up PCP&C 750w w/60A on a single 12v rail (hard to pass up at 140.00 with 30.00 rebate). One other thing, the new psu doesn't need those adapters/converters I made sure of that before leaving the store and should I go SLI it has the connectors to add another 6/8 pin card.

I hope this is the last time I will post on the topic because I installed the new psu, rolled the drivers back to 178.24 and so far the games that were crashing haven't so far. I'm idling at 38c w/fan at 65% and with Assassins Creed load temp was around mid 60c.

I won't bother with things to see which was the solution (older drivers or better psu w/out the adapters) unless I have recurring problems, but thanks to all who gave their assistance even if was just to allow me to vent and think.
