Need help with hard drive

The hard drive on my HP Pavilion recently died and I am now debating between buying a new computer altogether or paying for a new hard drive for a computer that is four years old. I am confused because when I type in the exact model number into google (WD2500BEVS-60ust0) everything that comes up says it is SATA. I bought a SATA drive at Best Buy and that kind won't hook into my computer because the part that connects it to the computer needs little gaps in between (or teeth), whereas SATA has no gaps and is one straight across, very skinny piece. I was then told at Best Buy that I would need a PATA hard drive to fit my computer, because those were popular right around the time my computer was made and then everything was switched to SATA shortly after. I also noticed that right on the hard drive in a box it says SERIAL in small letters with ATA below it so I really don't know what to think. Any help on what I need and where I could get it for a good price would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Buying a new computer, just because the hard drive died, is like saying that because your car ran out of gas, you now have to go buy a new car.

Confusing yourself as to what drive is in there. PATA has a flat ribbon cable that is anywhere from 40 to 80 pins. SATA is a smaller cable that both the power & SATA cable are different from what is used on a PATA drive.

But going back to the beginning, helps to post model # of the machine, not hard drive. And forget google, if you want info on the drive, just look at the sticker on it, no need to run all over the Internet looking for stupid stuff that is already right in front of you.

And the last part, forget the dumb asses at Worst Buy. They could not find their head from a hole in the ground.

just because you're board has a PATA port doesn't mean there isn't a sata port many computers shipped with both years ago.

What is the model number of your HP?

Found this from another post of theirs HP Pavillion dv6000 That would mean that it is a notebook, which also means that there is a plastic piece that you pull off of the pins on the 2.5" hard drive in the machine, and then you in turn place on the new drive that you replace the old with.

Ok wow I did not realize those little pins pulled off. And now that I pulled that off it has the same look as the two different SATA drives I bought from Best Buy. Yeah, a lot of help those guys were telling me I had to buy the PATA that was more than twice as much. So now I can just go buy another Western Digital drive, plug the little plastic thing with the pins onto the end of it, and that should work?

Again, the idiots at Best Buy do not know what they are talking about. This is why people point others to just buy from places like Newegg, or find good deals online through Amazon. Usually you can find the repair manuals, especially for your machine on hp.com.

I used to have the whole encyclopedia of the various repair manuals for the HP systems from 2001 to around 2004, but lost them, when my hard drive that had them on it, went tits up. This was before stuff like network storage drives became the norm.

Now, if you had just posted the pic, I could have probably told you right then without you wasting breath by listening to the wannabe's at Worstbuy. Take it as a lesson learned and get that sucker fixed, so you can get back to using it.

Ok, I hope that I attached those pictures the right way. But basically the little black connector slides onto the end of the SATA drive with the pins sticking out which plug into my computer.

And here's another picture of where the little black connector slides onto the SATA drive.

Only time I hit Best Buy, is when the local mom & pop store that I use is closed, and I need the part right then and there, and BB is still open. Otherwise if I can wait, I order online and have it shipped. Plus side is, no paying taxes for certain states, depending on the website.

I'm no fan of Best Buy but for HD you can do ok there. Looks to me that the WD drive you linked to is about the same price on Newegg (so no savings going to newegg) and BestBuy also has a Seagate as the Mekanic suggested.

A HD is a HD whether you buy it at Best Buy or not. If you have a BB nearby and want the HD now go ahead and get it. IMO

Sach, that one has half the cache, @ 8MB but it's larger @320GB.

Pardon my disdain for WD... :crap

Thanks, I forgot to check cache size. No problem on your not liking WD. I turned on Maxtor many years ago and never gave Seagate a chance. My last WD started getting errors after less than a year so I won't defend them especially since all the manufacturer's were probably cutting corners this last year with the floods.

I just wanted the OP to know other than possibly price there is no reason not to pick up a HD at BB if that is the easiest for her/him.

Thanks a lot for the help everyone. I just ended up going the cheapest way with the $53 one at Best Buy. I don't really use my computer for a whole lot other than surfing the internet and iTunes.

All I use my netbook is for internet, email, and a few documents. I have been batting the idea around to go with a 40-60gb SSD, since I save everything up to my box.net account. Everything like music is saved to the drive of a desktop that never gets used.

It is funny, that drives got huge, now those like myself are scaling back the size of drives, since everything either goes to the local or external clouds.

The SSD you choose use depends on what version of sata your computer is.

Actually a SATA device is backwards compatible. So, if the SATA port in a computer is only SATA 1, the device will work fine. Just like USB is backwards compatible.

brownizs, you don't want to buy an expensive 500 GB/s SSD, when you have a first gen SATA. It will only function at 25% of it's rated speed, i.e., 125 GB/s.
