I am trying to clean an HP Pavilion XT958, P4 1800MHz 512 MB RAM

Windows XP Home, Version 2002, SP2 (now)

Starting condition was all original HP load, couldn't load SP2, or do updates with Automatic Update, Internet connection would shut down after 10-20 seconds, could get it reconnected by disabling and restarting, but only for 15-20 second segments. And the CD drawer kept opening and closing randomly. Even then, could not connect to MajorGeeks.

Have gone through several days of loading running updating reloading several spyware/virus tools. System restore is OFF. Have now got it to the point where I can run Spybot S&D, Avast, SpySweeper, Trend Antivirus 2007. Have loaded XP Service Pack 2, and done all current updates, ran all the above cleaners in Safe and Normal modes. STILL have traces of crap!

I have CAREFULLY followed all the steps in your READ & RUN ME FIRST post.
(excellent, and HUMBLING advice by the way!)

I am now here, confident in the fact that I have followed your requirements, and I could definitely use your HELP! please.

Scan logs are attached to this and a second post.
Going through your checklist, I could not get CounterSpy to run and used AVG instead.
    Thanks in advance.
    John

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please remember to remain in one thread for your current problem. I merged you back into a single thread.

It was not a good idea to update Windows while still infected. It is too late now, so just take it as an FYI for the future. Never try to update your OS while infected as it could lead to bigger problems.

You need to re-run AVG AntiSpyware now. You did not allow it to fix anything. Run it now and fix what it finds and then attach a new log. Do this while I look thru the rest of your logs.

Also please go back and do step 2 of the READ ME properly.

Did you do something to your startups to cause them to showup like below?
Some of these are malware and some would be valid processes but not like this.

Make sure that you reran AVG Antispyware and fixed what it found. Then continue!

Did you notice that all the stuff you downloaded (probably with Kazaa) and that your put into the C:\WINDOWS\shared\ folder are showing up as infected in your BitDefender log. Bitdefender may or may not have fixed things. If it fixed them, it did it by deleting files which means all of these downloads are not of any use anymore. But since they were infected, they really were of no use anyway. My personal recommendation would be to delete the C:\windows\shared folder. When we finish all other cleanup, you should rescan with BitDefender to see if it detects these again.

Okay let's remove three malware services!
    • Click on Start, then Run ... type services.msc into the box that opens up, and press 'OK'.
    • On the page that opens, scroll down to Remote Ratio Services
    • then right click the entry, select Properties and press Stop Service.
    • When it shows that it is stopped, next please set the Start-up Type to 'Disabled'.
    • Now repeat the above to Stop and Disable the below two Services (if you do not find them or get any errors, just continue):
      • S3 Internal Chip
      • WindowsSpool Loader
    • Click OK until you get back to Windows.
    • Next, run HJT, but instead of scanning, click on the None of the above, just start the program button at the bottom of the choices.
    • At the lower right, click on the Config button
    • Then click the Misc tools button
    • Select Delete an NT Service
    • Copy/paste Remote Ratio Services into the box that opens, and press OK
    • If you receive any error messages just ignore them and continue.
    • Now repeat the above to delete the below two Services (if you do not find them or get any errors, just continue):
      • s3load
      • WinSpoolLoader
    • Now exit HJT but do not reboot when it tells you it needs to. We will do that further down after running HJT again to fix some other items.
Uninstall the below old versions of software:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 3

Run HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winsys32.exe] $$
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winspool.exe] $$
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WindowsSpool Loader] $$
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Sysres] $$
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [syscfg32.exe] $$
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [svpsvc.exe] $$
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [stats1] $$
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [s3serv.exe] $$
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [S3 Internal Chip] s3serv.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] $$
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nvchip4.exe] $$
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [msennger] $$
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [hmcoxci.exe] $$
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Configuration Loader] $$
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [clcl11] $$
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [checktime] $$
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [$$] $$
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [WindowsSpool Loader] winspool.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Windows Service Agent] winsys32.exe

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now download The Avenger by Swandog46, and save it to your Desktop.
    • Extract avenger.exe from the Zip file and save it to your desktop
    • Run avenger.exe by double-clicking on it.
    • Check the 'Input script manually' box.
    • Click on the magnifying glass icon.
    • Copy everything in the Quote box below, and paste it in the box that opens:
    • Now click the 'Done' button.
    • Click on the traffic light icon and OK the prompt.
    • You will be prompted to restart, OK the prompt and your PC should reboot, if not, reboot it yourself.
    • A log file from Avenger will be produced at C:\avenger.txt
    Now run Ccleaner!

After reboot, now install the current version of Sun Java from: Sun Java Runtime Environment

Now please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune. This program does not require an installation. The executable actually runs the program.

NOTE: This program is for Windows XP and Windows 2000 only. ATF Cleaner will remove all files from the items that are checked so if you have some cookies you'd like to save. Please move them to a different directory first.
    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Under Main choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
    If you use Firefox browser
    • Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
    If you use Opera browser
    • Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
    • Click the Empty Selected button.
      • NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main ATF Cleaner menu to close the program.

Now attach the below new logs and tell me how the above steps went.

    1. Avenger
    2. GetRunKey
    3. ShowNew
    4. HJT

Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Reminder Note: Once we have determined you are malware free you will need to disable System Restore, reboot, and re-enable system restore per step 8 of the READ & RUN ME. This only applies to if using WinXP or WinMe.

Chaslang - I reran AVG, in safe mode, and fixed the problems it found. Only it did not create a new report. It just left the same report as before. I've attached screenshots of the settings I ran, and what it found/fixed.

As for the $$ after a lot of files, those were all there right from the start.

I will work through your steps below and see where it goes.
    Thanks,
    John

THanks for all the help. The steps all ran pretty smoothly. Lost internet for a while, but was able to disable/enable and get it back.

Attached are updated logs. HJT log is one I just ran, since earlier it ran on "Scan Only".

Things seem to be running good. One concern I have is still a lot of $$ after file names.
Let me know what you think. I am going to start another Spybot scan and try to catch anohter hour of sleep!

Oh, btw, what part of Jersey? I grew up in Lyndhurst. Still have family there, Palisades Park and Wayne.
    thanks,
    John

You logs are free from malware. You may need to look into reinstalling all of the applications that were somehow changed to have their startup load commands changed to be "$$". I have never seen this before. Were they like this before you updated to SP2. Do things like below actually load and run at startup?

    Google Desktop Search
    iTunesHelper
    Msn Messenger
    Trend Micro AntiVirus 2007

    I'll send you a PM.

I have created something to try and fix these registry entries that are corrupt. Hopefully this will resolve the problems without requiring any reinstalls. A few items in that list were still malware related.

Now Copy the bold text below to notepad. Save it as fixME.reg to your desktop. Be sure the "Save as" type is set to "all files" Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.
Please tell me if you receieve a success message or not.

Now attach new logs from GetRunKey and HJT.

    How is everything working?

I was just logging in to tell you THANKS! everything seems to be working fine. I have rerun Spybot and Microtrends and only came up with ONE issue.. Spybot found an Avenue A cookie.

Now I see you've left me a script to try. Thanks even more.

I will try your script tonight and let you know the results.
    thanks again,
    John

The script seemed to work fine. First message asked "Are you sure...?" Second message said "Info has been added to the registry"

Attached are log files you requested.
    thanks,

Okay that seems to have corrected everything except this:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Trend Micro AntiVirus 2007] $$

You may want to consider reinstalling Trend Micro to resolve this. There is something that it should be loading here at startup that is not loading and it could leave you susceptable to problems.

If you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    2. If we used ComboFix, you can delete the ComboFix.exe file, C:\ComboFix folder, C:\QooBox folder, and the C:\combofix.txt log that was created.
    3. If we user SDFix you can delete all the SDFix related files and folders from your Desktop or whereever you installed it.
    4. If we used VundoFix, you can delete the VundoFix.exe file and the C:\VundoFix Backups folder and C:\vundofix.txt log that was created.
    5. If we had your run FixWareOut, you can delete the Fixwareout.exe file and the C:\fixwareout folder.
    6. If we had you run Avenger, you can delete all files related to Avenger now.
    7. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    8. You can delete the ShowNew.Zip and GetRunkey.Zip files and the files that you extracted from the ZIP files. You can also delete the C:\newfiles.txt and C:\runkeys.txt logs that were created
    9. If you are running Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • go back to step 8 of the READ & RUN ME to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:
