    Hello,
My internet explorer 32-bit is not working. I am able to access https sites using the IE 32-bit, but I cannot connect to any http sites. My IE 64-bit is working correctly with no issues. FireFox also stopped working at the same time. I have also tried to use Google Chrome and that also does not work.

My computer is Windows 7 64-bit. My internet connection is a cable connection. I contacted my ISP (PenTeleData) and there were no issues with the connection.

The problem began after an attempt to upgrade to IE9 from IE8. The upgrade did not go through at that time , possibly because one of the windows updates had not installed correctly.

Things I have tried so far include:
    - checking the internet connection with the ISP
    - making sure all updates were properly installed
    - going to IE - Internet Settings - Advanced and reset of IE settings and reset
    - a winsock reset
    - using scannow in command prompt -showed no issues
    - completely uninstalled Norton 360
    - made sure there were no McAfee products installed
    - downloaded Malwarebites
    - tried changing Internet settings - Advanced- to software rendering instead of GPU rendering
    - re-installed IE9
    - uninstalled and then re-installed newest versions of Adobe, Java, and QuickTime Player
-ran MS Malicious Software Removal Tool
    - tried running IE without add-ons and adding them back one at a time

I'm sure there are a few more things that I've tried. I tried to look up the issue and see what others had done but none of those fixes worked. I would greatly appreciate any help or ideas that you could give me.

One thing that did show up at the time the problems started was IOBit software. Uninstalling all the IOBit stuff was one of the first things I did.

I have the HiJackThis program installed so I could submit some of that information if it would help.

Thank you for any help you can offer.

have you tried to do a windows restore to before the attempted upgrade?

If your IE 64bit weren't working I would suspect something is blocking port 80. Something in windows firewall stopping all 32bit programs from accessing port 80, i'll have to look into that, which version of Windows 7 is it? Professional?

if you tried a restore and it didn't work, you might be able to uninstall individual updates in the add/remove programs by checking the box at the top to show windows hotfixes and scannning through removing the recent ones.

Hi, Thank you for your response and ideas.

I am using Windows 7 home premium.

I did try to do a system restore previously which did not work. I tried this morning as you suggested to uninstall the updates that were installed at and since the time of the issue one at a time and then rebooting and checking Internet explorer. It is still the same with the 64-bit working and the 32-bit https working but not the 32-bit http. I have uninstalled IE9 and now have IE8 again.

My Norton firewall is completely uninstalled and the windows firewall in the allowed programs both the internet explorer and internet explorer (64-bit) versions are checked to the allow settings.

Thank you again so much for your suggestions and help!

    Greetings, explorerhelpneeded.

handygal is much better in this field than I, so to both of you: please pardon the intrusion.

Just curious: you don't have any server software loaded, do you? Seems like a remember a client's machine in the past that had Apache and MySQL programs, and it exhibited roughly the same symptoms.

    Hi Caliban,
    Thanks for your post.

I do not have any Apache software installed. I have to admit that I'm not overly computer literate, (I tend to mostly use office, photo, and internet programs) although I've learned quite a bit this past week since this issue started. I'm not completely sure about the MySQL software. There is a program named Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Compact Edition [ENU] in my list of programs that was installed on 1/27/2010. I'm pretty sure we don't use it (at least not intentionally) because I was confused when I looked up the purpose of the program.

    Thanks for your suggestion!

    Hi.

You might try uninstalling the SQL software, see if you get a change in symptoms. It's certainly not going to hurt anything by removing it, especially if you don't use it.
