I run a message board for softball players and we have has an issue for over a few years with a guy starting trouble. Alot of the people on this website post tournaments as a business and he is hi jacking every thread. We had made some threats to people ad we would really like this person to be exposed so he is no longer posting. Any help would be great. I was not sure where else to post this.

What software are you using for the board? I know in vBulletin (and I'm sure others, but vBulletin is the only one I'm familiar with), if you're an admin or an admin has given you the proper moderator powers, you can see an IP address on every post. From there you can ban the person by their account or by a full IP ban.

Yes I believe I have the ability to do this. But he has causes a lot of damage and we would like the person to be exposed so that he will no longer be able to associate himself with anything softball again.

Well, that's a whole other issue. Exposing him sounds like you want to tell people his personal information, which is generally verboten in online communities. I have to wonder if it's really up to you if he is ever allowed to associate himself with softball again in general, but you certainly can control your own online softball community that you run.

"Exposed"? What do you mean by exposed?

Honestly, I think you should worry about your own forum rather than other online places if that is what you talking about. That's a losing battle. As a forum owner or admin, it's your job to keep your board running the way you want it to. Ban the person...continue to do it repeatedly if you have to. If you have a 'Report Post' button, encourage your users to use it if they don't already and report behavior that this person is exhibiting.

Other than that, you need to be more clear about what you are trying to accomplish.

I just saw Sgt Tibbs post. If you are in fact trying to drill for personal info about this person, you aren't going to find much help here for that.

That is not it at all. This guy has been on the message board for years, saying stupid things, hi jacking threads that directors are trying to post tournaments on and making rude comments to everyone that posts. This is a softball player in our community and I would like to have this guy called out for the jerk that he is and exposed to everyone so everyone knows who it is and what he has done. I promise there is nothing more involved but I guess thanks for the information.

Why has this person not been banned from the board?

Community? As in your real life community or your online community?

Really, we can't relate here at Major Geeks. Nothing like that is tolerated here. It doesn't matter if you've been around since it was created back in 2002. You become disrespectful of others or basically behave the troll, you are banned...sometimes temporarily, sometimes permanently.

Btw, you still haven't said what you are asking for help with...other than people knowing what a jerk the guy is. Sounds like he's managing that by himself.

No matter if this guy is a good softball player or not, enforce the forum rules and softball rules. This kind of behavior shown on the forum would not be allowed on the softball field. Ban from the board and eject him off the field/from playing the game based on softball regulations you have.

Exactly. Just enforce whatever rules you have.

And if you know him personally outside of the boards, why do you need to have him "called out for the jerk that he is and exposed to everyone so everyone knows who it is and what he has done"? If you all know him in real life, then I would think you all know what a jerk he is already.

Let me try one more time. I dont see anywhere on the message board to ban this IP address. The real owner of the board and not been involved in softball for years so he is probably not on there anyone or every checking anything that he can check. The person that is posting under several different user names but all from the same IP address is causing trouble. This board is for softball players to talk about the sport and tournament directors to post their tournaments. This guy makes post to all tournament directors posts bad mouthing the tournament or the director himself. What I am looking for is there any real way to find out an address, name, something on who this person is but looking at his IP address.

The board just makes you use a login in name and password, it does not ask for a email or anything to verify themselves. So WE do not know who this person is

First, is this a vbulletin forum?

Do you have admin status? If so, is it full admin status?

Do you have the ability to contact this person? Possibly they would let you know how to ban the IP.

Ban all the usernames. Continue to ban them as soon as they show up.

You will not be able to get a name or address from an IP address. This info is only going to be available from the guy's ISP. If the IP has not changed in all this time, he probably does have a static IP, so if you find a way to ban it, that should help with your situation.

You can go here to find the area and possibly ISP of the person: http://whatismyipaddress.com/ip-lookup

Again, I'd contact that site owner and ask them to up your registration requirements or ask that they give you the ability if they trust you.

There won't be any way for you to know who this person is regardless.

My only other suggestion would be to find out, if you can, what the person's ISP is and send them an email about harassment or whatever. See if they'll help you out.

Yes, you can try that. See if they can do anything for you. I'm not sure if it'll help you or not but if it's serious enough, it's worth a try. If you are going to go that route, I'd have all the information you can in regards to his posts and messages.

Honestly, I'd find a way to ban the IP. I think that's your most viable action. All message boards have this ability...or I've never known one not to anyway.

    What company hosts this board?

Hi Mods, does this really need to be aired here?

I have installed and maintained VBulletin boards as owner and Admin and think the person here needs to contact the persons running the board.

The IP traces to Dayton, Ohio.

FWIW there are ways to prevent any ban from a board. It is one of the various reasons I gave up this means of social networking...

As a question is being asked and no board has been named, I don't see any issue with the question. ;)

There's always ways of immediately getting around bans if you know what you are doing, yes, but if you have mods/admins that keep up with the forum, you can make it very difficult for the person to do anything. We've found in every instance they eventually give up if they decide to continue to try.:)

ATT wont give you customer information via ip, unless you legaly can subpoena it and i doubt it at that even, Honestly your only option is to ban the user and move on. An ip ban is beyond what most people can get around, and will pretty be the best solution you can find.

    Yep, A.F.A.I.K., that's correct.
Is there a 'Ban' and 'Delete' Button(s)? If so - use them, and be done with it, like Tim said. Otherwise, as Laura said, contact Board owner, as he is 'prolly the only one who can I.P. Ban, anyway - depending on privileges set.
