Hello, I have a pretty good problem on hand, I recently bought a used laptop, and in order to have everything in my name I copied a verison of Windows Xp Professional on it, and now its not reconizing the Modem, or the built in Camera, it didnt have any desktop items, but they are in the start-up file, The windows it had on it before was Xp Home edition, would this make a big difference? What should I do to get the built in hardware to work, the person I bought it from did not have any disk with it..Please help, Thanks

Go to your device manager and see if this hardware is a.present and b.has any exclamation or crosses over them.

From the device manager you can troubleshoot both devices which may resolve your problem or check the drivers.

Device Mang: right click My Comp > Properties > Hardware (tab) > Device Manager

Was it done as a fresh/clean installation with a hard drive format? Otherwise, you may have created some conflicts as upgrade installations can be a bummer sometimes. Check the device manager to see if the devices are listed and have no problems. Problems will be indicated by a yellow exclamatrion mark.

Im not sure Thanks for your help

Do you mean a jack (female plug), if so this will be the modem (laptop modems are very small). Even if previous owner used wireless this doesn't mean that modem was removed!! You can have and or use both, just the wireless offers greater flexibility and potential speed.

Try the trouble shooting in the Device Manager but use the installation disk as the source (XP Pro).

It sounds like just a driver problem. The Manufacturer website should have the drivers available for download.

What was the ServicePack installed on the XP Home and what is the ServicePack you now have with the Xp Pro installation. If you went from Xp Home SP2 to XP Pro SP1 or older, that may have caused your problem. You may be able to uninstall the Pro upgrade.

Yes I did go from Xp Home SP2 to a older verison of Xp pro, a friend give me that disk 2 years ago. I might have deleted the entire windows xp home, because some how I got into the C: drive and deleted it, Lord only knows what I did.. Looks like Im going to have to spend money to buy windows? Thanks for all your help, anything else please let me know. Oh and about the modem, Not sure if its a female plug? but my phone line did plug into, just isnt recognizing the modem to get online, I do believe it is just a driver problem, just unsure how to fix it since I dont have a proper disk, and I cant get online for updates..

Also I had a question about the memory on this laptop I bought, it says

    Intel(R) M Processor 1.86GHz
    1.86 GHz
    0.99 GB of RAM

Does that mean I dont have much memory or what? This is the first time I have every had a laptop, so I dont know?

Download EVEREST from this site and look under Motherboard > Memory.

Have you tried to troubleshoot your modem in the Device Manager!?!
