I recently purchased a laptop from a friend of a friend and the only problem is thst when i start it up it takes me straight to a black screen and it says "Password:_" in the top left corner.

How would i be able to get passed the password?
    Is it possible?

You asked your friend of a friend for the password?
your friend could ask his friend for the PW

Which operating system we talking about here?

Does this prompt for the password come up pretty quickly, similar to a DOS prompt?

Did your friend use this laptop for work or was it an EX works PC, as some companies install specialist security software in which you would need the password for.

Just a thought ...did you press "enter" at the prompt (incase there is no password set)?

The seller cant be contacted i'm afraid. I tried that one first.

    O.S is XP PRO

When its turned on the Toshiba shows up first for a second and jumps quickly to theenter password screen.

Dont know any history of the laptops use.

I heard about having to remove the security chip and replace it but that sounds like a lot of messing around.

Do you have the xp cd? ...If so, a repair installation (not recovery console repair)should wipe the password settings ....and leave everything else (except for upsdates) intact. Unless its a bios set password....

I put the xp disk in but it doesnt boot up. The password screen stays up uninterupted. I hear the disk spin very fast like its trying to boot but nothing appears.

Check to see if it is the power up password you need by removing the Hdd and switching the Laptop back on, if the password screen is still there, then its the Bios Password.:)

    Also found this:
    Key Disk for Toshiba laptops

Some Toshiba notebooks allow to bypass BIOS by inserting a "key-disk" in the floppy disk drive while booting. To create a Toshiba Keydisk, take a 720Kb or 1.44Mb floppy disk, format it (if it's not formatted yet), then use a hex editor such as Hex Workshop to change the first five bytes of the second sector (the one after the boot sector) and set them to 4B 45 59 00 00 (note that the first three bytes are the ASCII for "KEY" :) followed by two zeroes). Once you have created the key disk put it into the notebook's drive and turn it on, then push the reset button and when asked for password, press Enter. You will be asked to Set Password again. Press Y and Enter. You'll enter the BIOS configuration where you can set a new password.

    :) :)and then this, also:
use a device called a parallel loopback connecter. Basically you plug this into the parallel port and reboot the machine. The password resets itself automatically.
