If you just bought the computer and its giving you probems then id bring it back but i suppose you could try the following:

    1. Restart windows.
    2. Click start -> run -> type "msconfig" and hit enter
    3. Select selective startup. Click the startup tab. unclick all of the items. click apply and ok. restart the computer and see what happens.
    4. If this stops the problem then you should re click the above items in msconfig one by one and restart the computer. Each time you restart check if the computer is working. if the problem arises again then you know that it is the program that you last clicked that is causing the problem.

    Reinstall Windows
    1. Insert the windows xp cd
    2. Restart the pc
    3. While the computer is starting keep pressing the F8 key.
    4. After a while you should enter the startup menu. from this list select boot from cd.
    5. After this just follow the instructions.

Note: try other methods before this. this is a last resort but it wont do any harm to reinstall.

Note: I wrote this while drunk so any typing errors im sorry. :)

    If able to?
    Boot
    start/programs/accessories/system tools/system restore
    Restore to earler date

Or start in safe mode/ system restore to earlier date

When reboot press F8 key to access advanced startup mode
then several options boot to safe mode, last known configuration, normal, and several others if you choose safe mode can do system restore to eariler date, after choose that I believe window opens offering to restore to eariler date other wise do from start menue

Last option reinstall windows/ Emachine is probably restore disk read manual and restore

    Hi woodman
if im reading your post correctly you are unable to use windows at all from a normal boot
My suggestion would be to attempt to boot into safe mode (instructions already posted by ASUS) and uninstall Mcafee then try booting normally

    Post back with your results
