Need help with the sound on my computer

    I have just purchased a new computer with a windows xp operating system. When I play CD's or DVD's on Windows Media Player, the voices sound like they are coming through a hollow tunnel and are very hard to hear. I have tried two different sets of speakers, and the result is the same. So, I am sure that this problem is based in the operating system. Can anyone help me?
