Hi all! First off, thank you for any and all help you can give me on this problem. I have read and so far done everything in the Windows XP Cleaning Procedures thread. Log files are attached.

    Welcome to Major Geeks!

Please run MSconfig and put your PC into Normal Startup mode as requested in step 1 of the READ & RUN ME. You must remain in this mode.

Do you have some software installed that you are using for password auditing or recovery? I'm referring to the below driver I see:

    S3 lc3pkt_2.1;LC3 Packet Driver;\??\d:\program files\@stake\LC4\lc3pkt.sys --> d:\program files\@stake\LC4\lc3pkt.sys [?]

Which is known as this: http://www.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2007-111613-0906-99&tabid=1

And could be detected as malware.

Do you know what the below folders are for and why they are in the system32 folder? Are these for a screen saver?
    Code:
    "C:\WINDOWS\system32\"
    KITTEN~1 Jun 12 2009 "kittenandbutterfly_3122093 dir"
    KITTYI~1 Jun 12 2009 "kittyinthewindow_3102795 dir"
    SOMETH~1 May 6 2009 "somethingsfishy_3043510 dir"

Run this Disable/Remove Windows Messenger to remove Windows Messenger. Do not confuse Windows Messenger with MSN Messenger because they are not the same. Windows Messenger is a frequent cause of popups.

    Uninstall the below software:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6
    Java(TM) 6 Update 5
    Java(TM) 6 Update 7
Viewpoint Manager (Remove Only) <-- should have been uninstalled in step 1 of the READ ME
Viewpoint Media Player <-- should have been uninstalled in step 1 of the READ ME

Run C:\MGtools\analyse.exe by double clicking on it (Note: if using Vista, don't double click, use right click and select Run As Administrator). This is really HijackThis (select Do a system scan only) and select the following lines but DO NOT CLICK FIX until you exit all browser sessions including the one you are reading in right now:

    O2 - BHO: WormRadar.com IESiteBlocker.NavFilter - {3CA2F312-6F6E-4B53-A66E-4E65E497C8C0} - C:\Program Files\AVG\AVG8\avgssie.dll (file missing)
    O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [DWQueuedReporting] "C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\MICROS~1\DW\dwtrig20.exe" -t (User 'SYSTEM')
    O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\Run: [DWQueuedReporting] "C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\MICROS~1\DW\dwtrig20.exe" -t (User 'Default user')

    After clicking Fix, exit HJT.

Now we need to use ComboFix to remove a bunch of malware files.
    • Make sure that combofix.exe that you downloaded while doing the READ & RUN ME is on your Desktop but Do not run it!
      • If it is not on your Desktop, the below will not work.
    • Also make sure you have shut down all protection software (antivirus, antispyware...etc) or they may get in the way of allowing ComboFix to run properly.
    • If ComboFix tells you it needs to update to a new version, make sure you allow it to update.
    • Open Notepad and copy/paste the text in the below quote box into it:
    • Save the above as CFscript.txt and make sure you save it to the same location (should be on your Desktop) as ComboFix.exe
    • At this point, you MUST EXIT ALL BROWSERS NOW before continuing!
    • You should have both the ComboFix.exe and CFScript.txt icons on your Desktop.
    • Now use your mouse to drag CFscript.txt on top of ComboFix.exe
    • Follow the prompts.
    • When it finishes, a log will be produced named c:\combofix.txt
    • I will ask for this log below
    Note:

Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Now run Ccleaner. Only use the Run Cleaner button. Do not run anything else on any other forms.

Now download the current version of MGtools and save it to your root folder. Overwrite your previous MGtools.exe file with this one.

Run MGtools.exe ( Note: If using Vista make sure UAC is still disabled. Also don't double click on it, use right click and select Run As Administrator )

    Now attach the below log:
    • C:\ComboFix.txt
    • C:\MGlogs.zip
Make sure you tell me how things are working now!

Thank you for your help so far.

The only problem I'm having now is a pop-up for something called 'Status'. It keeps asking for a cd-rom for the installation. I have never installed anything remotely called this. I can't get rid of the screen. It won't go away.

Just rebooted to see if the annoying 'status' pop-up would go away, and so far it has. Hopefully I won't see that thing again.

You did not answer any of my questions.

    Also delete the below file.
    c:\windows\WSYS049.SYS

Then if you are not having any other malware problems, it is time to do our final steps:
    1. We recommend you keep SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware for scanning/removal of malware. Unless you purchase them, they provide no protection. They do not use any significant amount of resources ( except a little disk space ) until you run a scan.
    2. If we used Pocket Killbox during your cleanup, do the below
      • Run Pocket Killbox and select File, Cleanup, Delete All Backups
    3. If we had you use ComboFix, uninstall ComboFix (This uninstall will only work as written if you installed ComboFix on your Desktop like we requested.)
      • Click START then RUN and enter the below into the run box and then click OK. Note the quotes are required
      • "%userprofile%\Desktop\combofix" /u
        • Notes: The space between the combofix" and the /u, it must be there.
        • This will uninstall ComboFix and also reset hidden files and folders settings back to Windows defaults.
    4. Any other miscellaneous tools we may have had you install or download can be uninstalled and deleted.
    5. If we had you download any registry patches like fixme.reg or fixWLK.reg (or any others), you can delete these files now.
    6. If running Vista, it is time to make sure you have reenabled UAC by double clicking on the C:\MGtools\enableUAC.reg file and allowing it to be added to the registry.
    7. Go to add/remove programs and uninstall HijackThis.
    8. Goto the C:\MGtools folder and find the MGclean.bat file. Double click on this file to run this cleanup program that will remove files and folders related to MGtools and some other items from our cleaning procedures.
    9. If you are running Vista, Windows XP or Windows ME, do the below:
      • Refer to the cleaning procedures in step 3 the READ ME for your Window version and see the instructions to Disable System Restore which will flush your Restore Points.
      • Then reboot and Enable System Restore to create a new clean Restore Point.
    10. After doing the above, you should work thru the below link:

That is part of Norton, but I don't use that particular part of it.

Do you know what the below folders are for and why they are in the system32 folder? Are these for a screen saver?

Yes, they were screensavers, but I deleted them a while back. I went ahead and deleted the folders, since there was nothing in them.

Everything is running great, other than an annoying pop-up for something called 'Status' that windows keeps looking for a disc for.

I can't thank you enough for your help. You are a sweetheart for all you have done.

Not as far as I know. Even in the link I gave you Symantec indicates the publisher is @Stake. I have never seen this on any other PC with Symantec installed so I don't think it is theirs.

When do these occur? Could the be related to the above software I'm questioning. Do they occur in safe boot mode? Do they occur if no browsers are opened?

It would occur at every reboot, safe mode wasn't tested on it. No browers were open.

I went back to the link you gave below for more info on that driver. I disabled system restore again. I went through the regedit manually and found 2 items that were still there that I deleted. Rebooted, no popup appeared, so I restarted system restore. Hopefully, that little problem is now gone. I'm going to reboot again with system restore on just to be sure though.

After rebooting, again, I got the pop-up. I did some research on the status.msi that I kept getting pop-ups for; It was a driver for my printer (HP Deskjet F4180). I had to unistall, then reinstall the drivers for it. All is well now; no pop-ups upon reboot at all. Again, thank you for all your help. You are an angel for what you do to help others.
