Ok so i live in an apartment building and my best friend allows me to use his wireless internet. I have the PW to the internet and access to his router if i need it.
I play starcraft atm, and i have a problem with hosting games. I was told to port forward so i logged into the Router, port forwarded the correct ports and applied. STILL had an issue, so i went to my network options.

From there i set static ip and entered all correct info. Went back to router page and port forwarded for the ip i assigned my computer .1.10
    STILL nothing.

Someone told i need to change the router from DHTP or whatever to "static ip" The problem i face is my friend has about 3 comp's and isnt that comp savy, so the router needs to stay in AUTOMATIC mode so that his comps still work with internet and do not require static. My question is IS THERE ANY WAY around this so i can Host starcraft games without messing with his internet(meaning making the router not automatic and easy)

    Thank you som uch

You should be able to leave DHCP enabled on the router and still use a static IP on your computer. It is possible that the router could try and give out the IP address you selected for your computer to another device. To solve that issue you can exclude that address from the address range the router uses. Your router may call this an address reservation and it should be found in the LAN settings on the router.

Did you still have internet access when you set the static IP? If you do have internet access with the staitc IP but still can't host make sure you have the correct ports allowed on your firewall and make sure when you set up port forwarding that you did it for both UDP and TCP.

Re: Static Help ( no one in network can answer )

Setting his routers to static IP addresses will not interfere with his internet access. Once the router is set up, neither of you will need to do anything else unless one of you gets a new PC. His PCs can remain on DHCP and they will accept whatever IP address they are given by the access point. That can be the static IP you set up in the case of his router or the DHCP IP address from the free wifi hotspot at Starbucks.

Do i have to go to the router page and like ADD my comp's ip address i made to somewhere?
    this is what i did
Go to 192.168.1.1 find the RANGE of my dhcp 192.168.1.100 and allowed clients 50
so 100-150 are taken so i went to network connections ip/tcp etc etc
    Static -> 192.168.1.161
    Subnet 255.255.255.0
    default gate
    the correct dns etc etc
    I applied ( I STILL HAVE INTERNET )
Went to router went to port forwad forwarded the right port and selected BOTH and clicked ENABLE and selected 192.168.1.161 for the ip.
    Still cant host?

Also even after setting up static ip and visiting what is my ip i see something DIFFERNT than 192.168.1.161

Sounds like you have the router set up correctly. The only other thing I know to check is your firewall. You need to make sure you have created an exception for the port(s) being used for the game. I don't recommend disabling the firewall though you could temporarily just to test if that is the problem.

did you see the post about the whatismyip.com ? ?

Are you sure i dont have to go into the router and take off (Automatic) -DHCP and put it to STATIC and IF I DO THAT. Will my friends computer still connect or not without me doing something.

Re: Static Help ( no one in network can answer )

Just assign yourself a static ip thats not in the dhcp range of his router, then port forward to that. Like if his routers interface says its handing out 192.168.1.100-192.168.1.150 then assign yourself 192.168.1.10, That allows your static ip and his equipment to remain on dhcp.

That's because it is showing you the public IP address of the router not the private ip address of your computer. The router gets the public IP address from the ISP and uses NAT to hide the inside private IP addresses. All traffic form the local network is translated to look like it is coming from the one public IP address of the router.

Edit: If you turn off DHCP your friends computers will not be able to connect. Also this would not be causing the problem.

This is not a ip issue, its either an issue with you not having the correct port info, or incorrectly setup inside the game.

Correct ports are forward 6112-6119 and there is no (settings) inside the game its starcraft 1

Do i have to reset my comp for settings to take effect ? i was under the belief you did not because it is just the router/internet that restarts after u set it up.

What version of windows are you using? Starcraft one uses ipx as a networking protocol and as far as im aware you can't play over the internet using that protocol. Unless theres a tcp/ip option in unaware of?

no you do not have to restart your computer. Did you check your firewall settings? windows firewall has been enabled by default since Windows xp service pack 2.
