Need help

I have posted a little on this before but here is all the info on my problem.
Sony VAIO VGN-NS235J one year four months old. will not boot . I can get to the BIOS. When I try to start in safe mode I get a dark screen with a cursor blinking in the upper left on the screen. If left on at this point eventually I get an I/O error message about a device communication problem.
When I try the safe mode thing it appears to start to load files but wont complete. I did not pay Sony for the recovery disc so that is not available.
Can any one help? I think the hard drive is bad but not sure.
Funds are very limited will have to repair myself if possible so any help or instructions very welcome.:-o:-o
