I have a Western Digital 80GB ,2.0 External Drive. Well, last week, my system crashed and had to reinstall Windows 98se. I went to WD Support for a driver, which I need before I can install the drive. Well, something went very wrong and I had to take my computer to the shop. He found that I had fried my hard drive, and since my computer is 5 years old, I had him install a used drive. I hated to drop down from a 20 GB to a 8GB, but thats all I could do under the circumstances. Now, I need to install a driver for my external drive and I need to know exactly which driver to download. I found the drivers at WD site, but I don't know whether my drive is a Series 1 or a Series 2. How can I find out which drive I have? I have looked at all the documentation that I have and on the back of the drive and can not find it. I hope that someone can help me because I don't want to fry this drive.
    Thanks,

    Red

if its an 80gb drive then its likely to be the Series I as the series II only come in sizes or 320 and 160gb.

but if it has a serial number on the drive or docs post it here and either myself or someone else will check for you.

Be assured your not going to "fry" or destroy a HD by just installing a driver, its 99.9% of the time they die because of mechanical failures.

The serial number won't help, can you list all the information about your hard drive here? Like model number?

Also, why do you need a driver to install this Hdd? Should be plug and play.......

as to driver there is a win98 ( only ) driver for that external HD and as redryder is using win98 just need now to know if its a series I or II drive

Kinda thought that you meant Model number. I should have included it. The model number WD8008008-RNN.

I bet Series 1 and series 2 main differance is the USB.
    respectively USB and USB 2.0

figure out what usb you use and install the correct driver

No, this does not look like mine. The Model is the same except mine has a RNN at the end. I don't see any other numbers that come close. Thanks

I think what makes this hard to find is im sure that the highlighted 8 is or should be a B

    WD8008008-RNN

which then gives an option to what model drive you have http://www.shentech.com/shentech/wediwd8072us.html ?

which then leads onto finding this on WDs downloads site...

    Series II USB 2.0

    Capacity Model Number Order Number
    40 GB WD400B008-RNN WDXU400BBRNN
    80 GB WD800B008-RNN WDXU800BBRNN :)
    120 GB WD1200B008-RNN WDXU1200BBRNN
    160 GB WD1600B008-RNN WDXU1600BBRNN

    driver download for win98
