Hello all! I am a newbie poster here, but in the past I have enjoyed reading your great advice and tips.

I am experiencing a big problem with my IE. We have XP with version 6.0 of IE.

I cannot open links that pop up into their own window. The new window will be completely blank, no error message, nada. Please see link to screen shot below.

I cannot for the life of me figure out how to change it. Any advice?

    Thank you in advance.

Open an ms-dos prompt window and type the following hitting enter after each line.

    regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
    regsvr32 Shell32.dll
    regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
    regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
    regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
    regsvr32 Urlmon.dll
I had to do this on a customer machine the other day, similar problem.

Thank you very much. It worked and even better, it even fixed a problem we had with my hubby's PKI certificate being recognized. No one was able to figure it out. Yay!

    Thanks again!

Go download FireFox. Its an internet browser that is almost idendical to Internet Explorer on the outside. The interface (how you communicate with the program, things like the back button) is basically the same as Internet explorer so you should be able to use it with ease. The advantages of FireFox are things the typical user doesn't see. One major thing is that FireFox provides much better security than IE. Also, FireFox has built in pop-up blocking. The best part about it is that when you install FireFox for the first time it lets you import all your settings from IE (like bookmarks and saved passwords.) FireFox is a much better browser and is just as easy to use as IE. If you want to download FireFox go to http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/. Click on the words "FREE Download" in the upper right-hand corner. Its only 4.6mb so even if your on a 56k dial-up-connection it shouldn't take you more than 20 minutes to download. I highly recommend FireFox.

You could also try the tips/fixes on this site: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFAQ.htm
More specifically try this little IE patch: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/IEFIX.htm
This site is very helpful is handling most IE related problems.

The fix could be as simple as emptying out the Temp Internet Files folder as well, corrupt IE cache files do cause various problems.

Also you might give AvantBrowser (http://www.avantbrowser.com) or CrazyBrowser -which I use instead of IE- (http://www.crazybrowser.com). Both browsers are free, tab based and have multi-level pop-up blocking features integrated. I have tried MyIE and SlimBrowser as well but overall these 2 I mentioned work the best. Remember though, they do run on IE engine, they are not standalone browsers, but I have not experienced most of the problems I experienced with IE even on the same PC! Firefox browser (the other fella mentioned) runs on Mozilla engine so it will completely different. Make sure the settings on IE > Tools > Security > Custom Level are correct, make sure you have all browser plug-ins and Java Virtual Machine (www.sun.com) installed. But I do believe you problem is not due to a missing plug-in or add-on and I am sure if you used Firefox you wouldn't experience the same problem but check out the top links to see if you could find a cure for IE first.
    Good Luck.

Please post links to files available on MGs first. For example: Avant Browser and Crazy Browser are both here.

Thanks for the good IE FAQ link Turcoloco. Just bookmarked it. Should be a handy reference when IE users need help. One step closer to computer zen.
