need new laptop

Hey all, my daughter needs to buy a laptop for college. Usual usage - searches, typing papers etc. She doesn't want to go broke buying one, but is willing to spend 500.00. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

And to add my $.02:
When she narrows down the search to a few models, make sure she is able to actually see and feel the machine at a local shop or retailer before making a decision.
Ergonomics assumes a much greater role when it comes to portable computers.

 

If you're in the US, see if your daughter can wait until Black Friday. She'll get a lot more for her $500 if she can wait...
