Well i suppose thats how you say it but anyways my mother got a laptop and im trying to get the printer from the desktop to work on the laptop and i have tried the following:
    Homegroup
    adding it by the IP

I have got my desktop to work through homegroup but the laptop just wants to create a homegroup not join. also my desktop is wireless (built-in). not sure also if the PC names are the same that could be conflicting cause when i got the desktop one it finds it but cant do nothing. the laptop will find the desktop but its just the file sharing(this is through the network map). Ill have to upload some pics if some people need some. the printer is just plugged in by usb and i do have a router the can do this but its a pain to set it up for all this......

    Any ideas here...........???

I am not sure if i am understanding this right, but did you check to see if the computer that is hooked up to the printer is sharing it?

From pone of the computers already connected to the home group click on the home group and see because you should be able to make a USB key so all you have to do is plug it in to the other computer and it will allow it to join.

if this doesn't work please give me as much information that you can to help me figure out the next best step.

i have printers shared on a network on computers that aren't in the same homegroup, workgroup or any other kind of group.

Give the computers different names (for this example I will use DESK1 and LAP1). Are you using DHCP? Or static IP addresses?

On the desktop - go to the printers folder, right click the printer you want to share, make sure sharing is enabled and that you name the printer (ex. PRINTER1)

Now on the laptop go to Start > Run and type in (make sure you keep the \\ at the start) \\DESK1\PRINTER1 (press ok) As long as both are connected and are in the same IP range, it should ask you if you wish to add your printer.

If that doesn't work, I would need the OS of each computer and which version. At least one seems to be Win7 but which version?

sorry for double posting im using DHCP but the router has that feature where the ip is reserved so it like a static ip. i tried that run idea and it just shows the laptops stuff it could be that they are the same name(if so how do i change the name of the pc)

I am going to assume all home edition, if you are set on making it a home group which would be easier for other items as well, make sure that

    1. your network connection is set to home. you can do this by going to "start" "control Panel" "Network and Internet" then "Network and Sharing Center" under View active network make sure it says 'HOME'

    2. THEN go to "start" "control Panel" "Network and Internet" then "Homegroup"
Click Join now, and then complete the wizard.(You will have to know your homegroup password)

    Also try this

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Why-can-t-I-join-a-homegroup

    should answer all your questions

wish it was that simple cause everything is on home network. i deleted the onefile that the site told me and still the laptop just wants to create a home group. and yes every pc is home edition. so now tell me?

this may seem like a silly request but the other 2 computers are connected together and working correct?

are both the computers on when you try to connect the new laptop?
are both computers discoverable? (if you need me to explain how to do this ask)

would you allow me to take remote control of your computer to help assist you with this problem?
