    Hi All, :wave

I have a computer that I have upgraded and giving it to my father in law who refuses to use DSL, cable or otherwise only will use dial-up so I installed a 56K modem and all works fine no errors computer runs XP when I try to connect to compuserve his dial up choice of providers it keeps giving me an error saying compuserve cannot connect then I get modem cannot connect and I see that there are 0 bytes going in and 0 bytes going out I think COM 3 may be disconnected? When I go into control panel and hardware the modem is working properly. I also tried to connect to AOL just to see if it was a compuserve problem and no it is not same thing happens with any dial up service. ANyone have any ideas what might be going on.

Thanks All in advance for your help. ;)

You need a program to perform an in depth test of the modem, so download this: http://www.majorgeeks.com/Passmark_Modem_Test_d326.html Make sure the phone cord is plugged in when you run the tests. If it fails even one of the tests, the modem is no good.
New 56k modems are CHEAP these days, like under $20....

    Are you running a firewall?
ZA does not allow me to connect on two of my four computers. I get no popups, I just get a 404 error in FF. Then I remember I need to turn off ZA, turn it right back on and I can now connect. (Note: this is high speed, not dialup).

THANKS for the info and link. I did install a brand new modem and I downloaded the modem test software and attached is the results. What now? I am not sure what it all means except that the modem might be bad? OOPS how do I attach the text file?

Windows firewall is off but this computer has no other means of connecting to the internet except through the modem. I had to remove the ethernet card for the modem to even get recognized.
