Need some help!

I have XP and haven't used the PC for over 2 years. When I boot up my system it always opens system32 folder and there are only a few programs that I can get to work. IE being one of the few. Almost every time I try to install a program or run one I get the pop up to send an error report to microsoft, I have red through the malware forum and DL the files on there but my pc won't let me install them. I have also tried uninstalling the programs in the list in forums but after I get a couple uninstalled the pop up for reporting an error to microsoft comes up again and shuts down the add/remove programs. Any help at this point would be greatly appreciated.
