I own a small business, with 7 computers, and need to install something to restrict my employees' access to websites. They really only need to access maybe 3 sites for work related business. Is there anything out there that can do this. Also would like to monitor what they are doing. I have Windows 7. Thanks.

    Hi

What is your network setup? I assume you are using a router. Most routers can be configured to only allow a few sites. I believe that would be the easiest way to restrict access.

As to monitoring software, here is a link listing the top ten, with links to reviews and etc.:

EDIT: Keep in mind, if you use monitoring software, you are required by law to disclose the fact that you are monitoring the computers. The best way to do that is to setup a logon "disclaimer" message, or simply make a sticker to attach to each monitor stating the computers' use is monitored.

I have a central server, with 6 work stations with dental imaging software.

Okay, so in that case is all internet traffic routed through the server?

If so, someone with server knowledge could point you in the direction on how to setup site access restrictions, as I have VERY little server knowledge.

Is the server running Windows 7 Enterprise, or a Server edition of Windows?

Not sure if it's Enterprise. I believe all internet traffic is thru the server, not 100% on that however. The guy that installed my computers said he could block websites from his end before they reach the modem, but I wanted to have access myself to some sites and only allow a few for employees.

I understand. I assume you have a screen connected to the server, and can access the server directly? If so, click Start, then right click Computer to see what version of Windows is installed on the server.

Also, to understand your internet setup, how many internet cords are coming from the actual modem? If only one, does it go to a router/switch, or to the server? If it goes to the server, and then the server connects to the router/switch, you can control access to the different computers from the server. If the router/switch is connected to the server AND the other computers, you will likely be able to best control site access via accessing the router/switch settings (likely only accessible from the server).

Alternatively some PC based security suites provide URL filtering that sits on the computer rather than the server or router, you can control web usage on machines even if they dont connect to the internet via the office server or router. This way you wont need to be a server expert or even an IT expert to manage web policies, check out Worry-Free Business Security Services from Trend Micro as an example.

    Hi

Could be worth checking out the pricing of Websense (Web Filtering) software HERE, dont know how much it is for SMB (Small, Medium Businesses) as we use in work Enterprise versions for 5000+ PCs.

Also Webroot do a Content Filtering app also that maybe worth looking at, do take advantage of the trials that some of these companies give (generally 30days) but only install one at a time, basically get a feel of the app and see if it does what you want, and in an easy way to impliment.

Was thinking of if all your PCs where on Windows 7 that the in built, Parental Controls may do what you want, but its limited and may take a while to setup with the options you want.

With only 6 workstations, you could just add the sites you don't want people to view by adding them to the hosts file.
