Need to open old files?

I used to use Microsoft Works.....I just downloaded all my old files onto this computer and I can't open them. I tried to open them with Excel but all I get are symbols! Help, I really need to access these files, what can I do?

Computer Info: system: Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Version 2002 with Service Pack 1

AMD Duron (tm)
1.31 GHz
448 MB of RAM

40 GB capacity

I also have Microsoft Office XP Professional installed.
