I really hope someone can help, as I am at my wit's end with this ... I'm only an amateur, but I've never been beaten by my computer before, but this is threatening it!

I have Office 2010 and Visio 2010 on my laptop (Dell XPS L501X). On Thursday I decided to install the new trial Office 2013, as I had an email inviting me to. I installed it and all seemed fine until it asked me to register by logging in. I did, and it said the trial was not associated with my username (although this is the account the info was sent to and I used to install the trial). As advised, I tried the product key and that didn't work either, citing:

"Error 25004. The product key you entered cannot be used on this machine. This is most likely due to previous Office 2013 trials being installed. (System error: - 1073422306)."

No problem, I thought, I'll uninstall it. BIG PROBLEM ... I uninstalled it and now neither Office 2010 nor Visio 2010 work with the error message: 1321 (certain files cannoto be modified - check I have permissions, etc).

I have googled it, read through the MS support pages, used Revo to try to clean out all traces, checked the advice, but to no avail. I now have no usable Office software and have work to do, deadlines to meet!!! This appears to be a known issue, but nothing I've seen suggested actually works. Short of doing a clean install on the computer (which I want to avoid at all costs if possible), I am at a total loss.

Can anyone help??? Please! I am seriously considering a Mac!!!

If you have a system restore point that precedes last Thursday then use it. There may well be files left over from the trial but they shouldn't cause any issues though you may need to repair 2010 using the installation disk.

    Unfortunately, no :(

I tried that, but for some reason no rollback would work that preceded that date. I have no idea why, except that MS Office is causing me major stress!!!

So you are using Rollback RX?

No, just the standard restore that comes with Windows. Would it be worth trying the one you mention? I see there is a free trial version.

It's something for another time. For now just install 2010 again straight over the top of your existing installation. It's called a repair install and hopefully will get you rolling again.

Unfortunately none of the repairs worked, which is really odd.

I'm just seeing if I can install Office 365 instead ... maybe it will fix things (probably not). Will update shortly. Thanks for your advice.

Good luck with it, and yes, once life returns to normal do try Rollback Rx - just so long as you are not dual booting that is. Had you been using it already you could have overcome this problem in a few seconds plus reboot time.

Thanks - I will download the Rollback software and have it ready for any future disasters!

For some reason MS Office 365 has installed and "appears" to work despite issues with this as well over the weekend. I'm just trying to sort out Visio now, as I have some diagrams I need to update tomorrow and the work PCs don't run it! Am trying the 2013 version as my 2010 one has also ceased to work!

About as good an outcome as one could hope for given the problems. Well done. :)

Rollback is pretty amazing but does impose certain restrictions which you ignore at your peril - like no booting from boot disks and no restoring disk images.

Thanks for your help. Hopefully the Office 2013 will bear up - the interesting bit is that from what I've seen it's really impressive, at least for Word (I've not tried the other bits yet). Nightmare over the last couple of days though, and I'm not sure it's properly sorted yet, but if I need to resort to a system wipe and reinstall, at least I have some time now!

Hoping Visio will do the honours as well ... I really like that too!

If you install Rollback right now, while you have a usable system, you won't have to worry if something else misfires as it's so quick and simple to revert to any former state.
