It's either USB malfunction, that I've no idea how to fix, or an inefficient Power Supply Unit. When you plug in devices in USB ports they are supplied by the system. What are your specs and PSU?

Yep that's pretty much it but you skipped the most important, the PSU. What wattage, brand and age is it?

    Hi Sailor,
Just had to take the side off the comp to look at wattage...
It says 400w, it was working fine till i installed the itunes even when i pluged my 80gig external hd in.
So i dont understand unless i tunes uses more power than it can supply...?

    Thank you for the help....:major

Do you have any friends with a pc or ipod? Since the effect is non-destructive (reversible) can you try reproducing it with your ipod on a friend's pc or your friend's ipod on yours? this would tell whether it is the ipod or the pc.
Some other tests are to try all the usb slots on your pc and a different cable.

    Hi,
Done as you suggested with a friends laptop works fine on that, do you think my psu could be getting to hot,
as i did have four 80mm fans fitted but when i re cased my comp i took three out to reduce noise levels....?

I just cant see why it works on his laptop and not my comp..?

    Thank you for any help.....:major

Now we know it it your pc not the ipod causing the problem we can progress.

Firstly can you confirm some details about the connection.
Is you connection from the ipod to pc going straight into a pc usb port or is it going via some sort of usb hub or other device?
Have you got any other usb devices connected to the pc?
If so do they work properly with and without the ipod?
Does the ipod work with the other device(s) disconnected
Does the ipod work in any of the other usb slots on the pc.

Sorry bout dis but fault finding is usually a process of elimination.

Its possible but i doubt the power supply theory. Ipods don't take very much, certainly less than three fans. I hope one of the fans was not inside the power supply itself.

If none of this works the next test is if you can borrow a powered usb hub and connect through that. this is in case the usb power tracks on the motherboard are damaged but the data are OK.

    Hi,

1, The ipod goes straight into a usb on computer no hub used,

2, I have my printer into another usb port and it works fine, with or with
    the ipod,

3, I have an external 80gb hdd into another port, working fine untill i add the
ipod then the ipod shuts the comp down as soon as it's added.

4, the ipod still shuts the comp down even if it's on it's own and i remove all
    the other usb devices.

So iam at a loss as to the problem with it, i have searched the net for a solution but no luck as yet....?

    Thank you for the help...........:major

OK so the USB ports are working and although you didn't actually say so I take it the Ipod still shuts the pc down whichever port it is plugged into. So we must look deeper into the pc.
    go to device manager
    hold windows key down+press pause>properties>hardware tab>devicemanager
Expand usb controllers entry and by experiment find the Ipod
right click each root hub and select properties
click power management tab and experiment with the settings.

If this does not work and you have your windows cd handy remove all the usb entries in device manager and reboot.
Windows will find them and reinstall, try rebooting with the ipod connected.

    Hi Studiot,
I did as you said and checked out the device manager, all usb ports working fine untill i plug the ipod in then again shut down....?
So i rebooted and went back to device manager, where i noticed that there was an unknown device, ie my onboard modem.
Which isn't working as i'm useing a desk top eathnet modem/router, so i have disabled it now the ipod seems to work without shutting down, ( was this my problem..? ) Not really sure but hey it works ok now....

Just want to thank you for the help, have a good day..........:major

    Persistance pays off
    I'm glad it's sorted :D :D :D

Likely your system was short of interrupt slots and the one allocated to the modem was also allocated to the usb/ipod. The conflict caused shutdown.

The interrupt is the combined hardware/software scheme that allows each device - keyboard, mouse.........modem to claim to attention from the central processor. Ufortunately from Fred Flintstone's first stone pc on there have never been enough interrupts provided.

    have a nice day
