ok, basically my friends old comp died a while back (I thought it was the p/s, but that was not the case).

    HP Pavilion 742N
    AMD Athalon (2000+ , 1.67Ghz)
    512 Mbyte Ram

    so, just recently a co-worker gave me a m/b (gigabyte - GA-7VAXP KT400),

    http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Support/...therboard&ProductID=1391&ProductName=GA-7VAXP

I have the old m/b out, and the new one installed into the case, ram installed, pci cards installed. but, i'm stuck on the power button cable (and the usb cable). the instructions are vague, and of course the pics, are of another model board. anyway, i'm hoping someone here can help out, and/or point me in the right direction.

the wires coming from the power button goes into an 8 pin flat connector, then there is an adapter, that changes the 8 pin flat connector, to a 8x2 pin connector (16 pin connector). now the 8 pin flat connector has 1 hole plugged, and the 16 pin connector has 2 holes plugged (white stuff). (see attached pics)

i've got an errand to run, then i'll take a pic or two of the m/b connector.

    thx, sos

The picture you posted of 8 pin connector looks to be USB or Firewire

Your power button from your case will be a two wire plug that will plug into the front pannel header on your mobo

Your mobo manual should have detailed info on connections for front pannel header, usb, firewire etc.
If you dont have a manual you can download one from Gigabyte web for free, it's within the link you posted

well, the instructions are vague (as i said), i'll look around more later on. but the connector that i have pics of (already posted), is going directly to the power button (on the connector it says "Power SW./LED"). the usb/firewire connector is a 10 pin connector (2x5). i guess some of what i'm wondering is if i'll need a special connector, or what? also, it looks like i can hook up the usb wire either way, how do i know which way is which? thx, sos

8 pin, 10 pin, Sometimes I cant count, "Sorry"

Your system is a Gigabyte mobo installed into HP case? then the case connector is maybe special to the HP case, probably need to do some custom wiring

Your Gigabyte mobo front pannel header has two pins for power switch
Somewhere like "Radio Shack" or local puter shop might have two pin connector you can use

Other things like Reset Switch, HDD led, onboard speaker also use two pins & two pin connectors
