Hi Y'all. I need help with nero 7 burning rom. I'm trying to back up 400Gb of data to dvd and it's painful at the minute because My drive takes 40 minutes to burn a 4Gb DVD at 8x. To make things worwse, my cpu is maxed out all the way through. I probably need to answer some specific questions to solve this, so if anyone is kind enough to help, I'll do my best to answer em.

    Thanks :)

I wasn't aware that Nero 7 was out yet. I thought it came out on the 26th. Where did you get yours?

A friend of mine. I'm not sure where it came from, but he does a lot of beta testing and techhie stuff so i ask no questions. I had the same problem with nero 6 as well so it's not the version that's causing the problem.

Nero 7 was released October 9th for retail sales. Bestbuy and Amazon.com are carrying it now. October 26th is the direct sales availability date.

Nero 7, according to the Nero website will be available in retail stores and from Nero online from the second week of October, namely October 13th.

The latest current version is 6.6.0.16.

The only version 7 I'm aware of are pirated versions floating around.

I've never used Nero to backup a drive. Backup operations are CPU intensive operations. 40 minutes to create a backup archive and burn 4Gb, don't know if that is an unusually long period of tiime but doesn't seem unreasonable.

ok... how should i back up then? I'll buy some decent software if i need to. so what would you recommend?

    check this-

    start>all programs>nero>nero toolkit>neroinfotool

    look at the attached pic-

you want to make sure you have dma enabled. if you dont, let us know and we'll get you set up with that. buring 4 gigs shouldnt take 40 minutes. also, list what dvd drive you have.

No it shouldn't take 40 minutes to burn 4 gigs; but Nero backup is doing more than just burning it is also compressing data into a recvoery/backup archive at the same time.

  13. earlthemailman

    earlthemailman Corporal

either way, 4 hours is too much time. it should only take 20 minutes max to burn it, which leaves 3 horus and 40 mintues to be doing the compressign. i dont really know much about backing up, since i dont do it, but i have compressed and decompressed files many times. Granted these files were not 4 gigs though.

He's backing up 400Gb. It typically takes me 10 hours to backup 80Gb using TrueImage. When doing a backup operation buring the CD/DVD is only part of the operation, data must be compressed into a backup archive first and then burned, this is done all at once on the fly. You put the DVD in, data is compressed, burned, finalized and a new DVD is requested when needed.

I thought I'd checked, but you're spot on. DMA is off and I'm not sure how to set it up. I'm not sure what the brand of drive is though.

Hmm... it also seems that I cn't set anything other than PIO. I selected dma if availabe on both IDE channels, and there is a reference to dma ultra mode 6 on the primary, But the secondary channel is stuck on PIO. no wonder my processor's been acting up all this time. Put me out of my misery with this one. please?

try checking in the BIOS.. usually those settings will trump the ones within the OS

ok, well update your bios first.

now, i need someone to clarify this, i can't because i am too lazy to wait for my dial up to find the if this is true or not- so wait to do this until someone confirms this.

ok. right click on my computer, and go to properties

    >Hardware
    >Device Manager
    >Select "Secondary IDE Channel", right click, and uninstall it.

***MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT UNINSTALL THE CONTROLLER

    now, reboot.

If I am correct, which i believe I am, once rebooted your computer should automatically reinstall the IDE Channel.

Once rebooted and the channel is reinstalled, go back into device manager and right click on "Secondary IDE Channel" and go to properties. Now you should be able to select Ultra DMA with a number at the end.

I am certain this is what you do, but wait for someone to back me up, since i don't single handedly want to destroy your cpu.

Now... you're not going to believe this, but I did excactly that just before i read your post. Someone on another forum tried it and you were correct. DMA 4 is now in operation. Thanks for your help on that one. The problem now is that my discs fail half the time AND 4x takes 15 minutes and 8x takes 20.

I'm confused, scared... and a little bit hungry.

Help me mailman! I know you can. :D

  24. earlthemailman

    earlthemailman Corporal

Hmmm. when you say your discs fail, does that mean that they cant be read? or what? haveyou tried another media (dvd type)?

and, i have to run now, but if you havent, update your firmware. just go to google type in your drvie name and firmware

    i.e: "Sony-DRU 810" and "latest firmware"

  25. petemate

    petemate Private First Class

Burn process fails half the time. I've now got the ones that work burning in 10 minutes, so you've reduced the time it takes by 75%. The firmware is the latest version. Other users of the drive haven't had any problems writing on these Arita discs accordinig to the forums. It works fine when I'm not running azureus but now that DMA is enabled, does it matter what my processor is doing?

Yes, it has been released now, but he was/is using a pirated version from my understanding, which is the reason why I won't offer any assistance.

If I'm wrong, then correct me and accept my apologies.

  28. Wait if nero 7 is out will everone who has a purchased version of 6 get an update to 7?

I never said it was pirated. It's the final retail version that was given to me by a friend. I'm not too offended though. It was a fair assumption. I'm probably breaking the license by having it on my pc anyway if it's running on his too.

  30. I just checked the website and it says it will be availible for download on october 26th.

Best thing for burning is to burn only. DVD burning takes up a buttload of power. For best results, you should not have anything running in the background. A single program, Azureus, shouldn't have that great of an impact, but you never know. I have never heard of Arita discs- are they dvd+r's or dvd-r's? I would just try to buy like a 5 or 25 pack of Memorex, whichi is the only media that I personally use.

Also, there is NO way that 4x is faster than 8x - either you're burning a differnt amount of data, or you're running too many background programs.

It's possible. Resolve it if you can.

dvd+r's are the only media that seem to work at 8x, even though -r discs are supposed to. The only way I can guarantee the burn to go well at 8x is to shut down everything else. I was thinking of upgrading to a dual core cpu which might improve things. the only problem then is the motherboard, graphics and whatever else i need to buy with it. Is there any chance reinstalling my OS would help? It seems to perform slowly even when nothing else is running.

I appreciate all the help btw. I'm learning as i go, so I might be able to help other noobs in time.

This will be my last reply, then I will butt out.

Most problems like what you are encountering are usually caused by using dated motherboard drivers. (ie chipset drivers)

This can cause Windows to use PIO mode, or for DMA to do the opposite of what it is supposed to.

As far as to why I know it was pirated, you posted this on the 12th October, and had Nero 7 in your possession well before that, and so did your friend.

Nero 7 was NOT available till the 13th, so there is no other way it can be obtained unless it was pirated.

    Anyway, update your motherboard drivers.

    Good luck.

The preoccupation with the legitimacy of the copy I'm using is very telling and the self appointed nosey neighbour attitude would be amusing if it weren't so irritating. I think the idea that you couldn't get a copy before someone else is offensive to your ego. Why else would you give me the third degree like this? I bought nero 6 legitimately; i borrowed what seems like a legitimate version of nero 7 from a friend who has helped me to understand the problem to the point where i can try and solve it myself. Thanks to earlthemailman and everyone else who helped me with this.

Try not to take yourself too seriously though; it's major character flaw and it makes you seem immature. but as you already know everything, you already know you're right, and i'm wrong. Good luck to you too mate. I think you need it more.

Your post is titled Nero 7, which hadn't been released yet, so it is a pirated version.

It's very simple, we don't help people here with pirated software. That would destroy the good name MajorGeeks has.

Trying to worm your way out of it by saying you have Nero 6 doesn't wash with me.

As far as character flaws, stupidity, arrogance, and personal attacks are far more telling.

I'm still waiting for you to tell us all where you or "your friend" got it from?

  39. Will you two stop fighting before you both get banned or something?! Lets just figure out the damn problem!!!!!!!!!

:) Thanks... I came to the site to get help on what is essentially a hardware problem from people who for the most part have been very smart and kind enough to help me. This time, I've been targeted for interrogation and insulted by some anonymous busybody who has contributed nothing positive whatsoever, and now demands an account of my actions, and my friend's actions as if he were entitled. While I am curious exactly how I've displayed 'stupidity, arrogance, and personal attacks', I'm far more interested in getting help if anyone's interested.

I only really want to know if a hardware upgrade would help solve things, or if there's a way to make the best of what i have (my systems not that far out of date). Basically, my PC's set at udma 4 on the dvd drive, but 8x burning is taking longer than 4x, whch (if i understand correctly) might suggest that data's not transferring quickly enough to write at 8x. Is there a (simple) diagnostic program that i can use, or another way to work out what's wrong?

You don't read very well. I told you to update your motherboard drivers.

As far as insulting you, it was you who made this personal, read your own replies.

I just wanted to know where you and your friend got Nero 7 from before Ahead software even released it.

If it's legitimate, and we both know it's not, then why haven't you emailed Ahead Support? They are excellent in my dealings with them.
