When burning a DVD, how can I make the file name longer? So far only 16 characters show up, if I type more than that, the rest gets cut off.

I did go to ISO and change it to 9660 + Joliet, selected lvl 2 for a max of 32 characters, and checked the option below that said to allow for longer Joliet names but it still doesn't work.

Don't know if the brand has anything to do with it but I use Memorex DVDs.

If it's not possible to make longer names with NERO, does anyone know of a burning program that will? I make data DVDs mostly only.

    Thanks.

Are you sure the filename doesn't get cut of because of the width of the 'Name' column. Else try to burn the DVD with the UDF filesystem. UDF has been designed for this type of media and is the preferred filesystem on DVDs. Keep in mind that older computers might not be able to read it.

Only up the "Kage Kara Mamoru" shows up when I finished burning it.

Is there any difference between by burning it as UDF and a data DVD? If not and I can make longer files names with that, I'll use that one then.

    Thanks.

The disc name can only contain 15 chars, filenames can be longer. This is the same for the UDF filesystem, although it seems to differ in different burning programs.
There is no difference in burning a DVD with ISO9660/Joliet (CDFS) or UDF filesystems. Only the filesystem is different. It's like formatting a hard drive and choosing between FAT or NTFS. NTFS is newer and better than FAT. The same for UDF. A big advantage is that files can be (a lot) bigger than on ISO9660. The full specifications can be found at http://www.osta.org/specs/

Oh I guess I meant disc name. Where does the filename show up?

What would one of these burning programs that let me burn longer disc names be?

The filename shows up in the name column once you create a new project and start adding files.
A workaround for the disc title length is the program imgburn.
Have nero create an image of the compilation you want to burn (record using the imagerecorder instead of your real recorder), and then burn it with imgburn. Imgburn can change the nero title before burning it to a disc.

Just to make sure (so I don't waste a DVD), I'm using Nero Express to burn the image instead of the usual Nero Burning ROM (Doesn't matter which does it?).

After adding the files, and clicking next, I select Image Recorder. Does it matter what I type in the part where I make the disc name (cause It'll only allow up to 16) or does ImgBurn make the disc name for whatever the image file is? like if it was xyz.nrg and I burned it with ImgBurn with that file name, would the disc name be xyz?

If it doesn't burn the disc name of the image filename. Do I change it by going to ImgBurn > Tools > ISO > Change Volume Label... ? If this is where I change it, ISO9660 allows up the 32 characters while the joliet allows up to 16 which is the same as Nero. If I typed in both, would the ISO9660 show up as the disc name or would the Joliet show up as the disc name?

If it is the ISO9660, I'd rather it not be all in caps and using underscores for spaces. If its the Joliet, that doesn't solve my problem. Cause it'd be no different from Nero, cept taking longer cause I have to make the img first.

So far, it looks like the Joliet would show up as the disc name and I don't know how to make it so that the Joliet would allow more than 16 characters.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks.

I did some more research and found out that you can have longer disc titles in nero by setting the Data Mode to 'Mode 2 / XA', choosing ISO9660+Joliet for the filesystem, Level 2 (max 31 chars), character set ASCII and tick everything except 'Do not add the ;1 ISO file version extension'. Because a lot of the restrictions are disabled this way, the disc will probably not be readable on some computers.
This was done using nero 6.

Hmm, the Data Mode option is greyed out for some reason.

So the ImgBurn thing can't make the name any longer?

My mistake, Mode 2 XA is only for CD's. You should be able to get more than 16 chars in the name, using the settings in the screenshot. Make sure you choose Automatic in the 'Label' tab.
The maximum title length in imgburn is the maximum title length, they can't get any longer.

Well I don't know, maybe something's wrong with my DVD drive or version of Nero or something cause the rest gets cut off. And yes I did type the name with Automatic selected.
