It this a wireless connection or a wired connection?

If it's wireless, is the problem only present at the one location or everywhere you try to connect to the Internet?

    HI Harry

What is the make and model of your router/modem?
and have you rebooted said router/modem as this can sometimes clear up issues.

If you have another ethernet cable try that, if your on DSL connection then unplug any other phone and also make sure they all have DSL filters on them.

When this happens again, right click the network icon in the system tray (bit by clock) and choose Troubleshoot Problems and see what it finds and let us know what they are?

Can you boot into Safe Mode (F8 at boot and choose Safe Mode with Networking) and see if you're connection happens first time, if it does then suspect one of your startups as causing the issue, you can in msconfig (Start > type in start search box msconfig and hit enter) and its startup tab disable everything and reboot, does your internet connection work ok, if so then enable one item at a time and reboot until you find the internet connection stops connecting properly and then name the last application you enabled.

To be honest as your connection issues are random this method on msconfig may not work to narrow the cause down, so maybe a good thing to follow the below as written and we may see an issue with incompatible applications at startup, the main issue could be too many security applications or out of date ones for Win7 being used.

Also do call your ISP up and see if the issue is their end.
