.Net Framework

    Yeah this just makes me mad as hell.

    I'm running XP (SP3) on one of the PC's I use (this one), which is an older (2002) model, and which only has a 40GB hard drive. However, I have a WHOPPING total of 380.4MB of space taken-up (and - I'm thinking - slowing me down!) by this MS .NET Framework ... "stuff" (again, on a mere 40-Gig HD).

    This (below) is ALL in Add/Remove Programs:

    .NET Framework 2.0 SP2 - 183 MB
    .NET Framework 3.0 SP2 - 175MB
    .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 - 19.4MB

    in addition to .NET Framework "1.0", taking-up God-only-knows how much space (and multiple updates for all).

    I am not a developer, can't I simply purge all this crap, and add it back as needed - when/IF needed??

    Thanks in advance...
    PS - I've read everything I could find here about it, but I'm still just not sure if I can safely remove it from this PC.

    Some of those will be essential for certain apps.

    Run CCleaner and get rid of "crud" files that are really just junk.

    .Net and the space taken up on your HDD wont be slowing you down, only way it may do is if .Net was corrupted and a bad install, as mentioned by Bold Eagle .Net is needed for many applications these days as its a viable programming language that many developers of freebie applications use.

    Why the differenet versions, well in the real world we should be able to get away with the latest version in 3.5 only but sadly thats not the case always and the need for the older versions to be installed is wise. One off the top of my head is if your have an ATi gaphic card then the Catalyst Control Panel uses .Net if you dont have it, it wont work properly.

    Unfortunately too many applications programmers these days rely on .net of some sort being present, instead of writing their own code.

    Driver Detective is another such, and some websites also.
