Hey guys, quick question. Got a new install XP sp3, there's nothing installed on the computer, except, Ccleaner, SRWare Iron, Firefox, Search Everything, Mbam, Auslogics defrag, and Avast Free 2014. BUT, I got an important update from Windows Update, and it's .Net Framework 2.0 spk, 3.0 spk, and 3.5 spk1.
Why am I getting this as an important update ?? I removed it the first time, but my update notice popped up with updates ready and it was .Net Framework again. Any idea why I'm getting this ??

    No idea. Just hide it.
XP ships with no .NET framework version.
I'm currently running three computers with XP. The newest one has only .NET 2 SP1 installed. The two older computers only have .NET 1.1 SP1 installed.

Let me check to see what I have hidden on the newest XP computer.

The following are hidden: .NET 1.1, .NET 3.5 SP1 (KB951847) and .NET 4

I think at some point I may have used A. Stebner's removal tool to scrape off .NET 1.1.

Thanks plodr, I just can't figure out why it keeps showing up as an Important Update, when it never has before, it was always optional.

    Greetings, Nick T.

Could some installed 3rd-party program be calling for .NET and Windows (via Update) is trying to comply? Just a guess...

Hey Caliban, these are the only programs installed. That's why I'm confused, because this is my standard set up, I put on all of my computers. My others also have SAS, but not this one.

Strange one. I don't have an XP machine available at the moment, so I'm going to have to bow out. Sorry - good luck.

Ok guys, I just checked my sons computer running XP, and he has his updates to notify him when they are ready and he missed this past Patch Tuesday, so his updates were waiting, and guess what ?? .Net Framework is listed on the list of Important Updates. So evidently .Net Framework is now an being sent out with the monthly updates to systems that don't have it installed. Thanks for the help everyone.

You won't need the NETs until you install programs that require them. To avoid being bothered with the updates, go to Windows/Microsoft Update site and look for the checkoff option to not be notified again or hide the updates, usually related to the 'Custom' button instead of 'Express' install button. Windows just delivered an NET 3.5 Family update last Tuesday to my XP. I currently have no NET Frameworks installed tho 1.1 was included from the factory.

I hear .Net is going the way of the dinosaur, but that is just hearsay. If a Windows program requires it I don't install it, same with Java for that matter.

Hey Bugballou, .Net usually is in Windows Update as an Option, but now it's coming in as an Important Update. Most of the time you need to scan with the Custom scan, but now you use Express and it comes up. Odd. I'm going to ask Microsoft why the change ??
