Hi there, I wasn't sure whether to put this in the networking or driver section so please excuse me if I've posted it in the wrong one.

I recently got a Netgear wireless adapter, model WG111v2. When I first installed it, it worked fine for about a day then suddenly internet pages would either load incredibly slowly or not load at all. The problem affected both Firefox and IE. I uninstalled and reinstalled the adapter and it started working fine again, for about another day, then pages wouldn't load properly again. I now reinstalled it for a third time and it's working again but I suspect that pretty soon I'm gonna have the same problem. Could you please tell me what I should do if this should happen?

My PC is a Packard Bell IMEDIA 1559.

I used Everest Home Edition to try to get the details about the motherboard but I was a bit confused as to what I was looking for, so here's all the info I think may be relevant.

    Motherboard
    CPU Type: DualCore Intel Pentium D 820, 2800 MHz (14 x 200)
    Motherboard Name: Unknown
Motherboard Chipset: ATI Radeon Xpress 200
System Memory: 1024 MB (DDR2-533 DDR SDRAM)
    BIOS: Type Award (05/19/06)

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Sorry I forgot to mention that while loading of all pages is incredibly slow/not working, that I still have a full wireless signal.

    Hi

What Windows version and Service Pack are you using?

Wouldnt worry about the Everest logs as you have confirmed with uninstalling this devices software that it is likely the cause over something else. Personally and I have one of those dongles (gained it free with a router) and never found them too work very well, overheat like hell.

    But some steps to try......

Have you the latest software for the WiFi dongle? Latest version is HERE

If you leave your PC for a while, like not surf on a page for say 30mins etc is that when this starts to slow or not work at all? if so then it maybe Windows putting the USB device into hibernation, thus when you move the mouse its slow coming out of hibernation.

What you need to try is to open Device Manager then open the Universial Serial Bus Controllers branch and then look to see if the device is listed on its own or doubleclick each of the USB Hubs and then thr Power tab and look for the WiFi device, once you have found the HUB its attached to click the Power Management tab and untick the "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" box.

Hey again, I turned off the power saving option but after a day of use the same problem occurred. And now theres another problem, which is that the driver won't uninstall. If I try to uninstall it from "Add or Remove programs" it runs through the uninstallation procedure but after it the program is still there on the list. If I try to delete it from the Program Files folder it says its not allowed.
For some reason the internet is running fine again right now but I don't know for how long.

To answer your previous question I'm using Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2.

Also there may be another potential issue. Before I got this Netgear adapter I was using another Netgear adapter which was also a WG111 model but it was V3 not V2. I thought I had uninstalled all of it's files (after finding out the driver for that version didnt work on the newly bought one) but I've found a folder named "WG111v3" in C:\WINDOWS\inf Is it possible that there are files left over from the previous adapter that are causing problems with the new one?

It's all gotten a bit confusing so I hope I've managed to explain the situation well enough. Any info/advice would be great.

    Hi

It is possible the older files are causing a problem, if you cannot delete that file then boot to safe mode (F8 at boot) and try and delete from there.

Try Revo Uninstaller to uninstal the Netgear Software

The run CCleaner and its cleaner and registry options to remove any left over files.

Once uninstalled and cleaner, reboot and then re-install your driver.

    Thanks for the links

Do you think its safe to delete C:\WINDOWS\inf\WG111v3 ? I really don't know what it is or why it's there

    Hi

Yes its fine to delete WG111v3 as its a left over driver file from the other driver for the USB Wifi dongle.
